because we've all heard this at some point…

i take a look at the validity and value of the “argument” that hitler was a vegetarian. referencing several of his biographers and scholars, it is clear that hitler was as far from a vegetarian as you can get. And even if hitler was a vegetarian, would it matter? It’s time to lay to rest this persistent myth and non sequitur of an argument.

You ignore the testimony of Hitler's food taster who tasted everything Hitler ate during the time he resided in the Wolf's Lair.

It's possible that Hitler's vegetarianism could have been a "phase", so that at one point he actually was vegetarian. Possibly he had to give it up towards the end of the war when the Nazi elite retreated to the bunker in Berlin and supplies of fresh vegetables etc. would have been unreliable at best.

Also, I remain sceptical of sources that try to paint Hitler as an absolute monster, make fun of him by claiming he had flatulence, unsightly medical conditions etc. This smacks of propaganda. It was necessary for the WW2 victors to also win the ideological war with National Socialism, and the character assassination of its political leader could be part of that. I'm not saying none of it is true, but it's likely to have been exaggerated.

You are of course correct that if Hitler were a vegetarian, that does not somehow make vegetarianism or veganism invalid.

That question always minds me of the character 'Crazy Larry', a violent psychopath with a penchant for making 'hard men' his 'bitches', from the film 'Layer Cake'.

Larry's infamous 'life philosophy' being that "f*****g females is for poofs".

A vegetarian Hitler's equivalent life philosophy would be "herding animals, confining them in cruel intensive conditions, working them half to death as slaves and then murdering them on an industrial scale is for wimps".

Macho males, who see themselves as apex sexual predators, find Larry's view of them being the prey of REAL men to be very disconcerting.

The implications that a vegetarian could be 'man' enough to see preying on mere animals as being beneath their dignity, as they are 'man' enough to prey successfully on humans, is disconcerting to omnis for the exact same reason.

M'main point there being that disconcertation causes omni's to talk even more totaly muddle-minded bollox than they usualy do.

Sub point being that the world would be a better place if we reintroduced Hitler style concentration camps for omni's and gassed all the ones that refuse to go vegan.

serious business there ;) i agree that the really ridiculous arguments come out of desperation if would seem.

I think you will find the following quite interesting:
"An absolute and permanent ban on vivisection is not only a necessary law to protect animals and to show sympathy with their pain, but it is also a law for humanity itself.... I have therefore announced the immediate prohibition of vivisection and have made the practice a punishable offense in Prussia. Until such time as punishment is pronounced the culprit shall be lodged in a concentration camp." -- Hermann Göring, August 28, 1933.

To what extent Hitler was a vegetarian is debatable. However, it is an indisputable fact that the Nazis were heavily into animal protection:
There was widespread support for animal welfare in Nazi Germany,[1] and the Nazis took a variety of measures to ensure animals were protected.[2] Many Nazi leaders, including Adolf Hitler and Hermann Göring, were supporters of animal rights and conservation. Several Nazis were environmentalists, and species protection and animal welfare were significant issues in the Nazi regime.[3] Heinrich Himmler made an effort to ban the hunting of animals.[4] Göring was a professed animal lover and conservationist[5] — though from 1934 he was also Reichsjägermeister ("Reich Chief Huntmaster"). The current animal welfare laws in Germany are modified versions of the laws introduced by the Nazis.[6]

One thing I've always wondered is whether their animal rights considerations actually lead to their human experiments and genocide. When people bring up the inconsistent treatment of animals its often hoped that people conclude that non-human animals should receive similar protections as humans.....but the line can easily shift the other way and I wonder to what degree that happened. But I have no idea what philosophic considerations their animal rights considerations were based on.

The real question that needs to be asked is "why does it matter if he was a vegetarian or not"

....Unless you're trying to make some stupid connection like "Hitler was a veg*n. Hitler was evil. Therefore vegetarians are evil.

I think it's the old "if you can't be 100% perfect then why bother at all" chestnut there.

A vegetarian Hitler being 'proof' that vegetarianism doesn't guarantee 100% perfection so why bother with vegetarianism at all.

so true. that's why i tried to include both the data showing he was not and the point of "why does it even matter?!" Hitler was also a man, so are all men genocidal dictators? ;P

A mad thought ...

Everyone knows, indirectly, a friend of a friend's friend, usualy someone who went vegan and within a few hours of not eating any bacon had grown three heads.

Apart from Hitler no one on the face of the planet seems to know any evil vegetarians though.

I'm thinking along the lines that somewhere in the cob-webby attics of omni-mind there's the recognition that, with the sole exception of Hitler, every veg*an who ever walked the face of the planet is moraly superior to them.
