Thank you, BC. :)

Woman Charged With Child Abuse Uses Indiana Religious Freedom Law As Defense

Thanks. I found another article that mentions the child's age and shows a picture of his bruises.

Son had 36 bruises. Mom quoted the Bible as defense.

This may be irrelevant, but let me share some biographical details with you.

My parents administered corporal punishment to me/on me when I was a child, up to the age of 7.
My father would just spank me with his bare hand. My mother would strap me with this "cat o' nine tails" device my grandfather made for her, consisting of the wooden handle of a hammer in which was stuck about 18 inches of leather belt, which had been cut into narrow strips.

Corporal punishment stopped when I was 7. Why? Because my parents were Catholic, and Catholic doctrine teaches that a child reaches "the age of reason" at 7. My parents interpreted this to mean that you stopped hitting your child at 7, but thenceforth tried to "reason" with him/her instead.

I'm not trying to defend Ms. Thaing, but in a way her behavior was not so different from the way I was brought up.

I don't think, though, that I ever got beaten and bruised to the extent Ms. Thaing's child was.

My mother also administered corporal punishment. Sometimes it was a slap on the face, but more commonly it was a "spanking" to the buttocks. First it was with a willow rug beater, and then, after that disappeared, she used large wooden cooking spoons. I was in seventh grade the last time I got such a spanking, and she broke the spoon on my rear end.

I never had welts, though.

When my sister was young, before I was born, my mother beat her quite severely, once using a cast iron fireplace poker.

That kind of beating, and the kind this woman inflicted on her son, is not excused by any kind of religious belief or "cultural difference"; it is severe child abuse, and nothing excuses it.

OK, let's get back on topic.

My fault. I shouldn't have posted the article since it involves a sensitive topic.

I posted it primarily to point out that Pence isn't some dud that Trump pulled from obscurity.

Pence is dangerous in his own right.

If you would like to continue with the child abuse topic, please start a new thread.

Oh I get it... I think it's a scenario sort of like Bush and Cheney. Bush (Trump) being the village idiot, and Cheney (Pence) being the malicious one... Except in this case Trump is malicious too, but he's still a village idiot.. Make sense? :D

At least Dubya was only accidentally a fascist. :p

Dubya did like to pander to them evangelicals, no denying that! He talked the talk, but when it came down to it, it wasn't that common that he actually walk the walk. But to better explain what I was getting at; in retrospect, compared to these Tea Party assholes, Bush was pretty reasonable. Which is pretty scary to think how radicalized the right has gotten over the last 10 years or so.

Agreed. I've been feeling nostalgic for GWB this election cycle, which has really brought home to me how bad things have gotten.
