400lbs-Starting a natural vegan diet.

I wrote nuts above but should have added the wal because walnuts are the ones with right ratio omega3/omega6.

Great recent video on this issue:

I agree with most of what Jeff says I just don't appreciate his "I am right" attitude and people like Dr Gregor are wrong.... everyone has a contribution.

Agreed, the bickering is unnecessary, but maybe they think the polemic between the two camps helps spreading the more important part of the message which is, go plant based.

Hello all, many smart things have already been said here, in addition just the old piece of wisdom that going vegan in itself is by no means a diet, you also need to measure your food intake.

And the best « crash diet » might not work if you can not keep it up.

BTW not to be hypocrite on this issue I do have the impression, maybe wrong, that doctor Gregor reads studies without critical judgement, besides Jeff debunking several studies, my former dentist who is also a college teacher and very rigorous about these things denied a the information in one of his podcasts about teeth cavities and there is also the video below of doctor Neal Barnard actually analysing a study doctor Gregor cites and coming to a different conclusion.

And of course people should point out the points in which they disagree.

Cut your fats, salt and sugar, get plenty of fiber in the form of wholefoods, exercise regularly and brush your teeth. That's the basics. When you get too engrossed in details you fall down rabbit holes and find a ton of pointless arguments and debates with no clear answers. Make it easy on yourself and don't obsess about food then you will have time, energy and headspace free with which to live.

That sounds like wise advice. What's brushing the teeth got to do with a healthy vegan diet?

Yeah, the brushing your teeth seems sort of random. What about flossing? Or regular visits to the Doctor?
But exercise seems like a good thing to mention in this context. Dr. Grager even includes it in his Daily Dozen.
And it makes sense too. In order to get adequate nutrition you need to eat adequate food. If you don't exercise you can't eat as much food without gaining weight.
Of course exercise is not unique to a WFPB diet. The percentage of protein over calories is going to be lower in a WFPB diet, compared to a non-vegan diet. So in order to get similar amounts of protein you may need to eat more calories.

my point was that maybe Dr Gregor isn't perfect, maybe Dr Bernard isn't either (although he is very very handsome lol), and I know that back in the early 2010's I tried to go vegan using Dr Esselstyn's information and it didn't work for me - that doesn't mean that what he and his family do should be complained about - Jeff has made a lot of mistakes himself over the past 8 years that I have watched him (although not recently) and I just think he could have been able to get his message across without the dissing of others - most of what Jeff said has come from Dr McDougall and that's fine as he is the person that was responsible for myself and my honey finally sticking to a whole food plant based diet and yet he doesn't 'do it' for many other people - all paths that lead to less animals being consumed and harmed is fine with me and as he said there is no need to nit pick and try to be perfect... as the body is very adaptable

Most of the time when there are opposing viewpoints the best answer is a combination of the two. In this case maybe a combination of more than two.
I'm firmly in the Gregar/ Fuhrman camp. but I take away and use information from Bernard, McDougal, and Esselstyn, too

Oh, I just remembered this.. and I am pleasantly surprised that after all these years I was able to find it so quickly.

From this color coded chart you can see that Most vegan Diets are Mostly the same. just differences in emphasis
Although I don't think the data is 100% correct.

Yeah, the brushing your teeth seems sort of random.
It wasn't random, it was because of a video somebody posted concerning a debate over tooth cavities. My post was about the basics being simple and flossing doesn't come into the basics. It might be more ideal but a lot of people don't do it and don't have problems. Regular visits to the doctor won't keep you healthy either and is an irrelevant distraction from what I was trying to say. It isn't about doctors and medicine that most people don't need most of the time, it is about what I do in my life to maintain good health.

My bad, I shouldn't have posted such a divisive video.

I keep being sucked to the the world of duality.

My diet is pretty much the one recommended by Dr Esselstyn, it does contain either walnuts or flaxseed oil in moderation, but he says it is okay for people without heart disease.

I've been able to go on a no oils or nuts for considerable time in particular if using chickpeas as the legume but at some point start feeling the need for fat.

Honestly dental health isn't stressed often enough! Not till after a lot of dental work as an adult did I get a water pik, and use it daily, with a much better brushing routine with electric brush.
Dental work is way too awful, and far too expensive :sniff:

What I disliked about that video was how presumptuous, with that Jeff guy really cherry picking.
Dr Greger in particular doesn't sell anything, and his advice is very much about eating real foods that are obtainable, and affordable by all. He's quite transparent with his research findings

The one I do take issue with is Furhman as he absolutely does shill products.
Really have to take it all with an open mind.

Got you on that, silva! I have major bridges in my mouth, and maintaining that is a pain, and an expense. The mouth is a big gateway to the bloodstream, and mouth infection can pollute the rest of the body easily. Not to mention, it's hard to eat and enjoy with tooth troubles! Guard your choppers, so you can enjoy all the great plants! : )

But Fuhrman's nutritarian diet is very close to what Gregar recommends.
