US Guns in the U.S.

This is so freaking unbelievable...

Florida House approves bill to post “In God We Trust” in all public schools

The sponsor, a DEMOCRAT lawmaker who also runs her own ministry, raised the bill as response to the school schootings, because, while she believes that there needs something to be done about gun control, the real issues are brutal video games and people « putting god in a closet »

Well, that will certainly make it easier to quickly get « thoughts and prayers » to those who need it...

Well, turns out there WAS a « good guy with a gun » at the site of the Parkland Massacre, who was there 90 seconds after the shooting started.

A sheriff’s deputy, no less. Who was obviously too afraid to go in and confront the assailant, who continued for 4 more minutes to shoot unarmed kids and teachers.

Armed deputy who failed to confront gunman at Florida school resigns

But yeah, the *real* reason according to Dump was that the teachers in the building were not armed to confront the gunman ...

Some of the incidents since the February 14 shootings:

This "cut ties" with the NRA...when I read the articles, it just says they are ending discount programs. Why are the NRA even getting discounts at all in the first place? Discounts for gun manufacturers to fly on a plane? Who else gets discounts to fly on a plane? Bomb manufacturers?

Sounds like very small news to me (on its own), but perhaps a small part of something much bigger. This does feel very different to other cases. The whole political climate has shifted a bit more to anti-gun or that is how it seems for today, but we'll have to see how this plays out. It will be interesting to see if public opinion is shifting in the country overall.

It's interesting to see how public opinion shifts on an issue, without the facts really changing.

IMO, it's definitely a step in right direction. This time feels a lot different....

And the "discounts" might have something to do with this: FACT CHECK: Is the NRA a Tax-Exempt Nonprofit Organization?

Yeah, I know. :brood: The f*cking NRA enjoys the same not-for-profit, tax-exempt status as my small-town local community theatre! :fp:

.

It's not unusual for groups to have discount programs with certain car rental companies, airlines, retailers, etc., and/or to have "special" credit cards for members of the group. It's a way for businesses to access large customer bases and build brand loyalty with those bases.

This burgeoning boycott is notable because the NRA has thus far been sacrosanct - they carry a big stick. The fact that these companies are taking this step is a sign that they feel public opinion about the NRA is shifting.
