The NRA statement quoted a couple of pages back is disgusting. The fact that they are suing Florida and complaining about the age limit being raised to 21 is also shocking. And yet I was quite pleased to see them both.

Why? Beacuse it seems to me that the NRA is missing the public mood. They are making the kind of inflammatory statements that will reinforce their hard core support but lose them a crucial bit of ground in the middle.

I think they are being stupid and damaging their own cause, that's why I am pleased. Suing Florida for trying to raise the age to 21? Strategic mistake. It's clear that the 19 year old who left high school the year before is a threat. According to a politico survey, just over 80% of people support a 21-year old age limit. It's common sense.

The NRA carries on with this bullish attitude it might alienate enough people who don't feel strongly either way and shift the polling numbers enough to perhaps get some action from politicians, judges or whoever can change laws.

I am hopeful this is the start of a long decline in influence for the NRA over the coming decades.

I think the NRA actions and statements are possibly designed to win donations, that may essentially be their real purpose, and I can see that working, but I think they will pay for that with the damage to wider public opinion. Either I am missing something (what?) or this is a clear and dumb mistake.
