I saw this on the news yesterday. It's terrifying to think this is how anyone would imagine kids in America should live.

My current thinking on gun control:

If guns are O.K. on campuses, in stores and other public places, then they're O.K. in the halls of Congress, in the White House, at any public event, whether or not a politician, from the president on down, is present.

When our politicians start living with the presence of guns the way they force the rest if us to do, then fine. Until that time, they are nothing but hypocrites.

These are my current thoughts on why the US has a mass shooting problem not seen elsewhere on the same scale:
1) No real gun control laws
2) A society where wealth, power, education, opportunity are distributed unequally between people of different races, leading to distrust and fear between groups, including various conspiracy theories to explain these differences: Jews control everything behind the scenes, whites invented AIDS in a lab to kill black people, and black people are poor because they're aggressive and primitive.
3) A culture where male masculinity has become like a caricature, completely out of proportion. Owning a powerful, masculine gun is one of the most respected expressions of male masculinity.

In this climate, when a male is deprived of their hopes and aspirations or somehow feels strongly disrespected or humiliated, and they feel they have nothing left to lose, the logical thing to do to restore their honour and hurt masculine identity, is to use that powerful gun to shoot a bunch of people they feel are somehow blameworthy for their predicament.

Think about it, how many mass shooting perpetrators were women?

I would again like to point out that I am really concerned about the about 60% of gun deaths that are SUICIDES.

People in the US think owning guns is cool - I get it, I was interested in guns myself when I was about 10 - 25 years of age - but they disregard the simple fact that owning a gun actually puts their own lives at risk.

Of course, there will always be suicides, people who really want it will continue to jump off bridges, but I am convinced that there are very many cases where the presence of a gun can make the difference between a drunk evening of self-loathing with a hangover in the morning and the ending of a life (or a drunk brawl and a deadly shooting, or an episode of spousal aggression ending in the hospital versus the morgue).

I have read a few particularly heart-wrenching stories where kids who were mobbed at school came home, took their (or their parents’ ) handgun and ended their lives, so I have zero understanding for people who think it is a good idea to hand guns to kids. A few of course, were so angry that they decided to also rather take other people’s lives

It is my personal conviction that this carnage will continue until the NRA is disbanded and the second amendment revoked or changed, and even then it will be a long way to go.

The sponsor, a DEMOCRAT lawmaker who also runs her own ministry, raised the bill as response to the school schootings, because, while she believes that there needs something to be done about gun control, the real issues are brutal video games and people « putting god in a closet »

Well, that will certainly make it easier to quickly get « thoughts and prayers » to those who need it...
