Horse meat in 'beef burgers'

I wouldn't touch seafood, lamb or duck when I ate meat.

I get your aggravation guys, I really do... but their minds just don't think like that. At least not yet. I was once one of them and I try to keep that in mind. I just loathe dishonesty, a whole different ball game than denial. It is unacceptable being mislead about what you eat.

You know what they say, the mind is a terrible thing.

Is it unacceptable to serve an omni a spaghetti bolognese made with soya mince, and not tell them it isn't meat?

I would say so, yes. I don't mess around with food. I tell everybody that tries my food exactly what's in it. What if there is an allergy? These days many people are becoming aware of things in their diet like gluten.

I think what people not in the UK don't realise is that people are banging on about the fact it's horse, not about the misinformation on the label. It is definitely not ok for things to be mislabeled but all I hear on the tv/radio/Internet etc etc is that it's horse & people are outraged that it is horse meat because they like horses & don't want to eat them...

I'm actually sick of hearing about the whole thing now. :/ At least it's made people more aware of what goes into their processed food though.

Im actually shocked by the amount of people admitting they would eat horse if it was labelled as such. And other animals like Deer, which although some do eat is seen by many as no go meat.

I wish deer was a no go meat here. It's so common to see someone have a dead deer tied to the roof of their car or in the back of their truck.:(

It's wrong to lie about what is in food. It is frustrating that the point which most people focus on is "ew horse meat" rather than the fact that people are being lied to about what is in the food they eat.

Do you think so? I thought most people don't eat deer because it's expensive, not for any other reason. People do seem to get sentimental about horses though.

I always thought so, people seem to be outraged at veal and venision and fois grai type foods...maybe they just interview the outraged on the news.

No, I think it's true. I know dedicated meat eaters who won't eat fois gras or veal because of the force feeding and veal crates. And I know people who shudder at the thought of eating deer, even though they happily eat cows, because they see the beauty of deer.

Logically, the distinction between horses, deer, etc., on the one hand and cows, pigs, etc. on the other doesn't make sense, but as I said earlier, I hold out more hope for these people than for those who happily eat every animal.

After all, it was this logical inconsistency that started me thinking. and resulted in me becoming veg*n.

I think it's true too for frois grai and veal, I just didn't think the same was true for venison. Perhaps that's because I grew up in an area that was fairly conservative/near the countryside though, most people I know would eat venison but note frois grai. Or perhaps I'm projecting my own distinctions - I think of frois grai as something crueler than average, whereas venison is just another animal - and usually one that's free range or caught in the "wild" in my experience.

They frequently use the phrase "for human consumption". Was it legal to slaughter horses for animal consumption (pet food, etc) before?
I looked it up, as I think I remember seeing horse meat in dog food when I was a kid. Per wiki:
"Until 2007, a few horse meat slaughterhouses still existed in the United States, selling meat to zoos to feed their carnivores, and exporting it for human consumption, but the last one, Cavel International in Dekalb, Illinois, was closed by court order in 2007.[91][92]"

I do not understand all the fuss about horse meat as a vegan of course i am distressed to hear of it being put in burgers however the facts are meat eaters, eat cows with no complaints. I gave up meat and then later dairy because i wanted to be consistent in my objecting to animals being eaten. Most animal eats are not consistent and while some may be truly horrified to think they may have eaten horse few will shun other kinds of animal flesh because of it.

Horse meat was found to be 100% in a beef ready meal.

A woman on a disscussion show said (paraphrasing):
Where do they find all these horses? There cant be that many knackered race horses surely? And horses cost a fortune to keep!
Host:Well....they farm them.
woman:Oh right...oh thats awful!
