Hummus is awful.

Even at Middle Eastern restaurants there will be variation. One place I go to makes their hummus with a lot of tahini, another I go to uses only a little tahini. There is a huge difference in flavor.

I like TJ's hummus, but I think Sabra is disgusting.
Sabras has eggs in it. A local grocery store, publix, has some pretty good store brand. I like the lemon best. :)

Are you sure? I don't think it did last I had it but that was a few months ago.
I read it once on the label a year or so ago, and it had egg in all the flavors. I'm going to look it up now though, maybe they took it out? I couldn't understand why there was egg in hummus anyway.

ETA It looks like no eggs! :D Labelwatch.com says:
SABRA, CLASSIC HUMMUS INGREDIENTS: Chick Peas, Water, Tahini (Sesame), Soybean Oil and/or Canola Oil, Garlic, Salt, Citric Acid, Modified Cornstarch, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate to Preserve Freshness.

I've only had hummus once. It was flavored, and so disgusting I was scared to ever try it again.
My boyfriend's mom had me try a few types of hummus the other day. While it will never be one of my favorite foods, it wasn't as bad as the first time I tried it, and I enjoyed it.

OK, sorry Sabra, your hummus is vegan, no eggs! Their baba ganoush has eggs, that must have been what I was thinking of. I went to the grocery today and bought sabra spinach artichoke hummus as an apology. ;)NOT that I immediately ate 1/4 tub with pita, no no no. I read all the labels, all sabra hummus there was vegan, but baba ganoush has eggs.

Phew! I adore their Classic hummus, and was all set to have a mini Garbanzo freakout.

WTF? Baba Ganoush should NOT have eggs in it. Why do they have to ruin everything with dairy?? One of the local grocery stores here adds milk to their hummus. Disgusting and unnecessary!

I know, I love baba ganoush so much, and the only prepared one I find is eggy sabras. Why put egg in it? Makes no sense.

Sometimes hummus has a bitter aftertaste, I think it is the tahini? I like to add fresh lemon or lime to hummus to cut that tahini taste, and also to stir well before each time I serve it.

There is no live without hummus! :hide:

That said, some recipes replace the tahini paste with 2 tablespoons of freshly grinded, roasted sesame seeds and 2 tablespoons of peanut butter.
And fresh lemon juice and some resting time for the hummus in the fridge is a must have.

I have to be on the mood for hummus and usually roasted red pepper....I like it on sammies or wraps and w/veggies or chips....I buy it and eat it the first day and usually have to force myself to eat the rest...lol...

You know as much as I love hummus I have to agree with those who say that it can get old pretty fast. When I'm in the mood for it... watch out... but after a while I can barely force myself to finish what I've made.

I know these are old posts, but I think the same thing.

I have houmous once and really enjoy it and then the days afterwards I can barely force myself to eat the rest of the tub.

Why is that? It's weird.:dizzy:

Interesting...

I like hummus best as a spread in sandwiches...on a nice grainy bread/roll with onions, tomatoes and avocado.

I do not like a strong tahini or lemon taste in my hummus. If I make it myself, I leave it out.

I also wish, being made from chickpeas, that it had more protein...yes, I’m going there, lol. I know we don’t need as much protein as is suggested, and I’m proof of that because I get, maybe, 35-40 grams? (whatever the measurement is for protein) a day and my blood work is always great. But when I’m in weight loss/maintenance mode and paying attention to every morsel of food that goes in my mouth, nutrition is important to me and I expected hummus to be more than 2 grams per serving, which is only 2 tablespoons, I might add.

I do like it as a dip, though, with carrots and celery. And apples dipped in hummus is my favorite. The perfect blend of savory and sweet.
