TV & Film Movie Lounge

Your criticisms of the film are on-target, but I did really like "The Martian", which I saw Thursday night. Granted, I was somewhat confused by casting Mr Ejiofor for the character of Kapoor: he didn't look Indian to me, although I assumed the character he was portraying was supposed to be. But he wasn't familiar to me as an actor anyway (I only knew of Matt Damon and Jeff Daniels), and not having read the book, I didn't catch what you mentioned in your spoiler.

Chiwetel Ejiofor was nominated for "Best Actor" oscar for his role in "12 years a slave", which definitely makes him one of the more widely known actors of colour in Hollywood.

I definitely suggest everybody to see "12 years a slave". It is heart-breaking in many scenes, but an important movie and one where vegans and vegetarians will be reminded in many scenes that while luckily nowadays everybody knows that human slavery was and is very wrong, animal slavery is still continuing and also needs to be abolished.

In the book, Mark gets reprimanded by Nasa communication technicians for using language that is deemed not suitable, reminding him that the whole world can read the transcripts.

To which he replies ....

(.) (.) Look, boobies!

After that, they don't reprimand him any more....

To get ready for "Star Wars - The Force Awakens", I have just watched with my family "Star Wars" (now dubbed "Episode 4 - A New Hope") with my family on BlueRay Disk.

Tomorrow (or later today), there will be "The Empire Strikes Back", and the "The Return of the Jedi".

Then we are ready to go to the cinema to see the new one.....

I really enjoyed this film as I'm a great fan of Glen Miller's music. Such a tragic end as his plane went missing over the English Channel during WW2.
He was such a wonderful man who gave so much joy with his music to troops that were overseas.

What did you think of the film? (I have not seen it.)

Oliver Hirschbiegel's critically reviled biopic Diana -- starring Naomi Watts as the late Princess of Wales -- was quickly dethroned by moviegoers in North America, grossing $64,914 from 38 theaters for a bleak location average of $1,708.

STORY: 'Diana' Director Oliver Hirschbiegel Says Negative Reviews Are 'Devastating'

Diana opened a month ago in the U.K., where it also bombed (one British reviewer called it "car crash" cinema). Entertainment One, which is distributing the film in the U.S. and a number of other key markets, including the U.K., is hoping Diana finds an afterlife on DVD, VOD and other digital platforms.

I only saw part of it and will try and see the repeat. The actors don't look anything like the people they are meant to portray.

I also watched the documentary after the film. There were so many interesting facts and details about the Lancaster bombers. Many of the planes went missing and half of the squadron died. It was also very interesting to hear the survivors and how they described what is was actually like to be part of these attacks.

It was a very moving documentary.

Just watched the Pixar cartoon "The Good Dinosaur" with my kids.

This cartoon tries to answer the question "What would have happened, if that asteroid had missed earth 65 million years ago, and Dinosaurs would not have become extinct?"

According to the good folks at Pixar, this would likely lead to

- Apatosauruses (plant eaters) developing agriculture, plowing fields with their noses, planting corn and building farms (complete with surrounding fences)
- Tyrannosauruses, due to their carniverous nature, becoming cowboys and driving large flocks of bisons across the, well, prairie (complete with Texan accent)
- this leads, of course, to confrontations with velociraptors who rustle the bisons from them.
- and humans, who - for whatever reason - behave like dogs (complete to the fact that they listen to the name "spot" if named that way) are befriended by dinosaurs and kept as pets (and finally released into the wild, to give a good message to kids)

In other words, if I were asked to characterise that movie with one single sentence, "so painfully stupid that it physically hurts at times" would be a good start. Yeah, I'm a killjoy (my kids found the movie funny).

Best regards,
Andy

We have been to two totally awesome movies this week. Star Wars The Force Awakens which I found very enjoyable and The Martian which I liked very much as well. I will have to get the book now!

Saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang yesterday with my family!

Had to explain to them that in my home country, I watched that movie every Christmas day on TV.
They really liked it, but complained that now they can't get the songs out of their heads again.....

That is a lovely film for children. The Sound of Music was on BBC yesterday. These classics are very popular during the Christmas period.

The Sound of Music was on BBC yesterday.

I still have not watched "The Sound of Music", like 80 % of the other people who were born in Austria.

I heard that in every other country it is about the opposite, with 80 % having seen it and considering it the most important movie about Austria ;-)

I certainly would say so.

I've read that The Sound of Music is not a big deal in Austria, which surprises Americans.

My one complaint about TSOM is that I think it gives the impression that most Austrians were opposed to the Anschluss, which is what I thought for years after I first saw it at the age of five. It wasn't until many years later as an adult that I learned that the opposite was true. Austrians literally welcomed the Nazis with open arms. And hugs. And flowers. *shudder*

Just saw "Bridge of Spies".
Very good movie, interesting piece of history well produced - as always - by Steven Spielberg, with great acting by Tom Hanks. Highly advisable!
