Music Music Nerds

Damn, you did splurge a bit on the deluxe. I wish I could afford that, but I cannot justify spending that much money on even a Steven Wilson release, especially with a new Nick Cave album coming out around the same time. It seems a conspiracy is afoot to part me from my hard-earned money.

edit: Also, another Rogues Gallery CD will be out at the same time. I might as well just sign my ******* paycheck over right now.

I was archiving an old blog of mine and found this:

Manifesto # 1
1) NO COVER SONGS. EVER.
2) No banter with the audience. Get onstage. Play songs (I.E. rock) and go home. Let the music stand alone.
3) Being paid for a gig is a benefit, not a requirement.
4) Make a list of venues to play before you even get a gig. Also have a list of venues you would refuse.
5) Dictate to your audience. Don’t be dictated to by your audience. If you like it, someone else will. And they will find you.
6) Look the part. Dress to be taken seriously.
7) Discover new approaches to songwriting through the collaboration of ideas.
8) You’re only as good as you think you are. If you think you are local bar band that is what you are. Aim high. Conversely, you are likely not as good as you think you are.
9) Know when not to play. Silence is a note.
10) Consistently challenge yourselves to create your own sound. Be compared to no one.
11) Play to your strengths - know your limitations.

Normally, I would have passed on such expense, but I had that extra money (God forbid, I actually save it, haha).

I know what you mean. Between sales on Steam and new music output, I'll never have more than beer money in the bank for the rest of my life.

Dedalus! I love your music, and videos! Beautiful voice...

Love Roxy Music, Manifesto too...

Feeling like the blues tonight. I found some Lightnin' Hopkins and John Lee Hooker records on vinyl today and they're currently spinning now. My upstairs neighbor is about to seriously hate my ***.

I am listening to Steven Wilson's The Raven That Refused to Sing, and I am getting so stoked to hear this stuff live. April can't come fast enough!! That said, I have been reading some fan reviews over at the unofficial Porcupine Tree forum and am dismayed to see so many people dumping on 70s-style prog -- all the familiar OMG it's so overblown and full of w*nkery, blah, blah, blah. Well, being a child of the 70s and a dabbler in prog (I was a HUGE Yes fan back in the day, so call me a fan of the sometimes-overindulgent or whatever), I LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!!!!!! And I guess I just don't understand some of the hate. :D. I know it all comes down to personal taste and whatnot, but really, it's so apparent to me that there was so much love and effort put into this album. I love all of the influences. I can hear Yes, Genesis, obviously King Crimson and so much more. There's a jazz-fusion feel to it as well, reminding me a bit of Pat Metheny. There are far too many jazz haters, lol. I think this album is a beautiful piece of work.

There was a lot of wankery in 70's prog. A lot of bands trying to outdo Yes and King Crimson without much success. Hell, I think wankery is kinda the point of prog music, to show how good you are at your chosen craft and to be acknowledged by your peers as a great at what you do. The new Steven Wilson album is very good and he should be getting the accolades for it. The man can pretty much make anything he does interesting and enjoyable. The man's sense of harmony and song structure absolutely blows me away. It's a credit to him that his music doesn't sound very complicated until you see the sheet music. One almost wants to throw their instruments down in dismay. Almost....
Anyway, I'm stoked that the release date for the new Clutch album is almost here, thank the gods. If I'd have had to wait any longer, bad things might have happened.

Agree on Wilson's sense of harmony. His harmonies sometimes give me chills or make me cry. I'm not a musician so I don't see sheet music often, but I read somewhere that some of the music he wrote for the Raven is beyond his playing capabilities. He always downplays his playing, and I do think his greatest strengths are in the writing/composition area. I never get bored with his songs. They seem to move along like a trip on a winding road or a movie or a short story. I think he put together a fine band as well, judging by last year's shows. The flute and piano on this album are just beautiful and so moving. And some of the guitar solos just rock.

LOL about the Clutch album. I don't think I've ever listened to Clutch, but I think I will give it a try. :)

Wow, I love it! Going to have to get me some Clutch. Are they touring?

Oooh, they are playing in New Haven on April 16th. If it's not a crazy work night, I might be able to go. I can't hit the May shows, as I will be away on a trip. I'm going to be broke from all my concerts this year :D. So much for saving money, hah!
