Rise in People Who eat More Vegetarian Meals

For me, the flavor issue is not with the meat replacements, but with the dairy replacements. Some I like, but most I don't.

And the chef saying, if you want to eat meat, just eat meat obviously doesn't get it. We eat meat replacements, even if they're not that great, so that we don't HAVE to eat meat. And because we don't WANT to eat dead animal flesh.

Yeah, people forget that meat can be awful too. I never liked every kind of chicken or pork that was available.

Yeah, I never actually liked some of the omni dishes my mother used to make, so when I became a vegetarian, I figured it was a good excuse to avoid those dishes. :p

I really don't understand why people put fish in another category and don't view it as meat. Fish = Meat.

The Jewish religion doesn't count fish as meat, either. Kosher rules say that meat and dairy can't be eaten together, but fish doesn't count as meat for that. So it's not just Catholics.

It's a good trend. Last thing I want to do is discourage people from cutting back with an all or nothing attitude.

Speaking of meat replacements... OMG I came across the best homemade "sausage" patty alternative in the Vegan Diner cookbook, delicious. Bought the book for smoky soy curls, but tried the sausage patty one too. I won't post the recipe as I can't find it freely available on the web, but here's a link to the book. An oh the sage gravy is incredible as well.

Don't start me on the Catholic friday and lent deal. Anyhow , its great tho there is a rise somewhat of people at least checking into Veg lifestyle.
I think it's really good for people to at least try to cut down on their meat consumption. It may even want to make people explore more which is good for the animals ,the planet and anyone willing to try.

Personally though I don't feel ok with eating something that was grown from cells from living animals.Too:weird:!!

I could never understand how people could eat and enjoy kidneys, heart or liver; and I had an aunt who was very partial to eating the 'parson's nose' which is spectacularly disgusting. And tongue....TONGUE? for goodness sake people, it's been in someone else's mouth :yuck:

I have been told of even worse things that people eat !:(

You are all familiar with soul food? A BIG part of soul food is the pig. And every single part of the pig is cooked and eaten, so nothing should go to waste. Seriously, from snout to tail and everything in between, inside and out. By way of explanation, it's the black people in the South who came up with this, and since the slaves were stuck with the worst food possible, the leftovers that the whites didn't want, they had to find things to eat. So they made every part of the pig edible. :yuck:

During the 2nd World War in the UK it was the same - food was rationed so they had to be less fussy about what they ate, and were more willing to eat unusual parts of an animal. When we were kids my mom bought some tripe* for us to try - something she had 'enjoyed' as a child during the war. It was disgusting - so bad that even she couldn't stomach (excuse the pun) it.

*tripe is a cows stomach lining.

Yummy, pig *****!

My mom always told us the story about how her mother tried to trick her into eating cow's tongue. Then there was an incident when I was around 9 where she tried to trick me into eating lamb (she told me it was chicken). I knew exactly what it was as soon as I took my first bite. I immediately reminded her of the cow tongue story and how hypocritical it was of her to do the exact same thing to me.

Every grocery store here has a section for non traditional animal parts (like jarred pig's feet, tongue, etc). It's disgusting. Plus we have tons of meat delis around here. The stench that comes out of them is vomit inducing.:yuck:

Just to add to the 'grossies' ..

Braun: You stick a dead head in a pot and boil it untill everything that isn't solid bone has come out/off. Strain it. Add the bits to aspic jelly. Let it set solid.

Pre 'enlightenment' days I would eat pig and lambs heart a lot. Trick was to cut into the ventricle, remove the grisley artery and vein remnants, stuff the cavity and sew it back up before cooking.

Minor bonus being that I wouldn't be totaly stumped over performing emergency open heart surgery so long as I had access to a ball of string, a sail makers needle and a 'Kitchen Devil' brand knife.
