Most dogs I've met LIKE to have something to do and service dogs can be way better off than pampered pooches who don't get exercise and mental stimulation and just lay around the house, wear clothes and eat gourmet meals. Now of course no one has a right to abuse a service dog but no "owner" has a right to abuse any dog. I think people who treat their dog like a spoiled kid are a bigger issue than people who use service dogs.
Sure humans turned wolves into dogs for their own reasons, but there is evidence that suggests wolves actually chose to join with humans too. Just because it's not what a dog in the wild would do doesn't mean the dog isn't enjoying himself. Actually things like termite and drug inspections DO use skills dogs would use in the wild.
