Sick dudes or a sick society?

I keep thinking people are gonna start calling me Blobbenstein in real life, if someone recognises me from the picture thread. That would be a shock. But I'm a big fat bloke rather than a cute woman, so I think I don't have to worry about stalkers.

You never know. But then, stalkers are pretty unpleasant, not a nice thing to have anyway.

The problem with meeting someone online is that you don't get the gut reaction you would if you met someone face to face. I've met up face to face with online people at vegan meet-ups (not for sex obviously:D) and it's weird how different some people are IRL to how I imagined them to be.

(ETA - if that makes sense!o_O)

That wasn't exactly what I said, I just said the female form is beautiful. Although, yes, I personally think it's clearly more beautiful than the male form. (Duh, just look at it! :p) But you may want to consider this:

From this article: Women Are More Beautiful Than Men (Satoshi Kanazawa in Psychology Today, January 23, 2011)
So at least there are more beautiful female models to choose from.

I'm not certain if you're joking. That seems to only indicate that females are considered more physically attractive in the cultures where the studies took place, which is specifically why I mentioned Ancient Greeks (but there are other examples, I expect), because if they did a similar study in that culture they might get different results to the ones conducted today. Our eyes are trained to look for female beauty more than male beauty, but that's cultural.

Makes sense to me Moll.

So much so that when I have a special online freind I don't want to meet them in irl for fear of spoiling things.

Ah, I seem to have neglected to include all my assumptions in my reasoning:
  1. Women are considered, on average, more physically attractive than men.
  2. There are objective standards of beauty, such as adherence to symmetry and the golden ratio.
So when women are considered more physically attractive, that's because they are, according to objective standards of beauty.

Who created the "objective" standards? Humans with their subjective preferences.

I expect chimps find each other attractive......it's really what you evolved to find attractive, for obvious reasons.

I see a lot of asymmetrical looking people walking around with their husbands or wives or partners. So I can only think that it is the media which is telling us that we are all only trying to exclusively date symmetrical looking people. Or perhaps scientists. But I dont see any actual evidence of this.

I don't know what this discussion about looks has to do with the original post anyway as I thought it was about some creepy men harassing/stalking women 0nline.

Guess people didn't have much to contribute with.

Only time I had something to do with that was when I made an sexual joke when talking to a girl on a dating site.

I wonder how it goes on gay dating sites. Is it just as bad?

I've never been on one, but from what I can glean...

(And, assuming you meant "male" by "gay," as I feel like lesbian dating sites are their own thing in their own right and I'm not really qualified to comment on them)

There are a crapton of subcultures devoted to some attitude/demeanor/sexual or physical feature. Most of them have pet names for themselves and each other. Each group is inherently attracted to, and inherently aggressive toward, specific others. Combine this with the fact that most "gay dating sites" are actually sex hookups for closeted individuals and you have some pretty strange things going on in seemingly alien languages full of derisiveness, anger, and objectification.

I'd say it's toxic, but in a different way. This is due to all the internal issues of the gay community, whereas men harassing women is a larger societal issue.
