Specieism, racism, and sexism

But, but, he didn't know this week's PC police approved word, IS.
There is no "PC police". As Lindy West recently wrote: "No one's coming to your house and carting you off to Insensitivity Prison. But you, as a person living on this planet, get to make a choice whether you want to hurt people or help people. Whether you want to listen or shut people out."

True enough. Sometimes I think that people who don't care about other people in that regard partially do it because they don't expect other people to do the same for them.

As part of my 'save 1,000 words' campaign, here's a picture ...

I hope that helps, Spang.

Did anyone specifically say there were literal police?.....

A [fill in the blank] police is someone who takes it upon themselves to activity promote a certain idea which they view with an almost a religious frevor, and scold/shame/admonish/insult/label/isolate/censor others who do not follow those rules/speak the language of said idea to the letter. It's usually a person who has a burining desire to feel superior/holier-than-thou to others which may stem from a variety of psycological issues.

Without principles how do you measure suckage in the first place?
a mixture of objective data (science), informed guesses (extrapolation and modeling), and a dab of outright subjective guessing (e.g. the perfect is the enemy of the good).

moreover, because "ethical principles" are based on subjective assumptions that can subsequently prove to be incorrect i prefer flexible assessments of value.

Lots of people brought up in racist societies turned out to be fine and upstanding anti-racists.

Of course. But I don't see what that has to do with people using outdated and offensive language.

As far as we know, he didn't say racist things to anyone that could be personally hurt.

If you're contributing toward the usage of certain harmful language, and getting other people to defend using that language, then you are contributing toward that language being heard by, and used against, people who it will hurt.

Human interactions do not exist in a vacuum.

As indeed it was. Chovie explained the currently accepted terms, which he immediately adopted. I stand by my statement that it's wrong to label the man a racist.

Oh, everyone's a racist. I probably say racist things without thinking about it sometimes. The important thing is to try and correct what is so built into our society, which is what it sounds like that man did, so, actually... From how it sounds... he's a good man, not really a racist man, with some outdated attitudes that could be described as racist. Which is what I was saying in the first place.

Well ...

It is 1.49am here now and 'coffin dodger' is so 1.48.

Expecting 'oxygen thief' (out at 01.47) to be back in the PC vocab by around 02.01.

Good grief, you're gross.

"Fascism." Good lord. You're a straight white guy in your fifties. You'd be skyrocketed toward success in a Fascist environment.

Aye, if it's a matter of uniforms; Then technicaly you can't be a racist 'less you carry a burning cross and wear a white hood.

.. and that's a bunch of bairy hollocks as every fool knoweth.

Completely off-topic ...

The ALF had a stand at Brighton VegFest and that all got a bit confusing; Apparently there is no ALF and that is what the man, who didn't belong the non-existent ALF, was there on the ALF stand to tell you.

They had an actualy existent collection tin though. Just to **** the guy off I made a non-non existent donation.

I'm completely fine with saying brassica oleracea isn't the same as homo sapiens.

Brassica oleracea, for those who aren't in the known, is probably most familiar to us as cabbage. It also includes cauliflower, kale, brussels sprouts, etc. It's quite a versatile species. But if I'd have to choose between saving the life of a human or an individual of b. oleracea, I'm going human, hands down.

I'm a specieist. And I ain't apologizing.

Thank you, Ray Bradbury, for your uneducated remark and massively outrageous claims.

Also, for using a giant-*** off-topic image. (If that post at the thread's beginning is off-topic, then this sure as hell is.)

It is Godwins Law. Which also means that a zombie attack is imminent soon.

Easy one!

I'm stuck as to which would be the correct choice between 100 monkeys (cute ones, not the ones with big blue bottoms) and Adolf Hitler at the moment though.

I like that, as a soundbite.
That would make the imperfect the enemy of the evil and the friend of the good?
If so;
We should avoid perfection like the plague and strive to be as imperfect as we possibly can?

or maybe it's just a way of saying that we should not let subjective visions of perfection get in the way of striving to be more ethical.

Wouldnt be xonsidered racist or sexist ANYMORE please. Think back only 60 years....I'm not sure but it all seems to be an evolution of letting go of ignorance and or hate and intolerance. When something annoys you you want to squash it. Dismiss it. Get it away .... However, I have come to realize it is not my place to judge or hate SO I try to put myself in others place so to speak. But DAMMIT it is a challenge with those pesky flies!!!! They try and test my Vegan values all the time yet I consistently spray them with lavender or other scent, pick them...ewwww... up and put them outside. Cockroaches too. I mean, I would not want to be squashed each time as a woman minority I have been annoying...or dirty or diseased....IMO insects are the most discriminated against. And BTW my God mama was an entomologist hence my own peaked interest in such tiny creatures. Amazing species really.

Surely, you're joking. Both those things are everywhere.

*this same sentiment was communicated in a much more succinct format, but that post was deemed "off topic".

The vast majority of humans wouldn't be considered racist or sexist, but 98-99% of the human population would be considered specieist. I don't see how they're part of the same system.

Sorry...messed up on my post....wanted to quote this. And the 2% that are not would go along with the 2% Vegan I suppose? I would hope? [emoji111]
