My daughter got me into watching Orange is the New Black on Neflix. Captain Janeway has aged. Good show BTW.

Two episodes into this. I really like it. We did the sleeping on the bed trick in the Army during AIT.

Orange gets better with each episode. It has just the right combination of funny and serious. And there's a lot of representation that you rarely, if ever, see in a TV show. Episode 5 is next.

I once wrote, briefly, about the similarities between Army life and prison life, after reading an early chapter in the book A Woman Doing Life: Notes from a Prison for Women, written by Erin George, a woman serving a 603-year sentence for the murder of her husband, which she very likely didn't do.

I've been reading these assigned books about the deprivation of liberty and noticing many similarities between prison life and Army life. But nothing has been more similar than the spades story Erin George tells in the first chapter. Like George, prior to my new life, I had never played spades before. The only real difference, besides not being locked up, and imbibing alcohol while playing, was that I originally learned the game by watching others play rather than being thrown into it like George was. In time, I would play, but poorly. However, I would become a better spades player over time, eventually proclaiming myself a spadeologist.

The way we played spades in the B's, that's short for barracks, was so similar to the way it was played in the dayroom at “Flu Flu,” that I could have replaced George's name with my own, and the names of the inmates with the names of my Army buddies, and it would still remain pretty near accurate. What they called a dime we called 10-for-2, and if successful, that's 200 points. But going Boston, the profanity-laced smack talk, intimidating the other team, only getting the books you bid, nothing more nothing less, and the reprimand received when you didn't, was identical. And often times, like the inmates, we'd be in our government issued uniforms.

I'd be interested in knowing if the show's creator, Jenji Kohan, read Erin George's book, since as far as I know, it's the only book written about female prison life by a woman in prison.

My mother currently has an obsession watching Gilmore Girls.
Wtf is up with this crap? All it is is teenagers and adults talking about having sex with eachother. Why is this entertaining?!

Your mum obviously likes the sex talk. Just cause you get older doesn't mean you lose interest in sex. :p

It's not even GOOD sex talk. It's just "dont sleep with him hes married" "omg what was your first time like" "I dont know whether I should do it or not!". I wouldnt mind if it was half decent :p

Have you started it yet? :) we're a few episodes in and really liking. It's an interesting concept.

No, I'm probably going to sit down and watch them all in one go.:) I keep seeing people discussing it online and I'm trying to avoid seeing what happens.:lala:

It's not like I'm limited to a handful of channels - I have a premium cable lineup so I have plenty of others still available, plus a ton of DVDs I can watch - but I'm still PO'd about it. I don't know why they have to hold their customers hostage because two wealthy companies are having a temper tantrum about money. :bang:

Really enjoying The Returned. It leaves you REALLY NEEDING TO KNOW what the hell is going on, dammit. :)

Finished The Returned. Last episode didn't answer ANY questions, so if they're not explained in the next series the whole thing is a bit silly & makes no sense.

Now we need a new series to watch which is quite difficult as bf has is up to date with everything! If anyone has any suggestions at all, please do tell. :)

How about:

Wonderfalls
Dead Like Me
Pushing Daisies

Or something like Meerkat Manor from Animal Planet?

Thanks Amy!

I've heard of Dead Like Me but know nothing about it. Not heard of the other bit will check them out. :)

Ugh, I had ABC on while I was doing other things and Tim Allen's show was on. I already knew it was a sexist, disgusting, offensive piece of crap after I attempted to watch the first episode, but now I see that it hasn't changed at all since then. I really hope that show gets cancelled.
