The internet loves a good story on alleged health hazards of vegan diets. This week, it’s all about how vegan and vegetarian men have low sperm concentrations. The alarming research is from Loma Linda University, and it was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine(1).

Should you be concerned about the fact that the vegetarians and vegans in this study had sperm concentrations that were lower than those of the meat-eaters? I don’t think so for a number of reasons.

For the record, I myself "fathered a child" after more than 15 years as a veg*n. (The last 7 years as a vegan.)

Ginny doesn't mention it, but I wonder to what degree zinc is an issue here. Sperm production requires a good deal of zinc and vegan diets, when not well planned, can be short on it. If this association ended up to be true that would be my guess for the cause.

The panda plot to reduce competition for bamboo shoots by encouraging the humans of China to eat more soy was not a raging success.

The great cow conspiracy to thin out the humans of India by vegetarianism backfired, a bit, as well.
