Literature What are you currently reading?

Cometothinkofit, I should see if there are any new Pierce novels.
So... the last book she wrote I have already read (and just about everything else she wrote).
The last book she wrote, Tempests And Slaughter (2018), was to be the first book in a trilogy. According to a fan she made some "continuity errors" in the book and was in the process of re-writing book 2. Then she had covid and then brain surgery. Again according to her fans she is recovering and has finished book 2 which should be published next year.
When it comes out I'll have to read Tempests over again because I don't remember anything about it. Maybe I can find the audio version.

Interesting side note. Tamora never expected to be a YA author. In fact her first books aren't really YA (they include premarital sex). But young girls became her biggest fans and then her publisher convinced her to write to that audience.

I am almost through a book called How to have an Epic Retirement. It is written for Australians so some of it is irrelevant to me, but it is quite interesting.

I wanted something "light" so as I was looking through the new books, this one caught my eye, "Sand, Sequins & Silicone" by Pia Mia. It is one of those large paperbacks and on the back cover pictured the author and stated she was a celebrity singer. I never heard of her but then I don't follow pop culture. After looking her up, this book is a fictionalized version of her own rise to stardom. It is a romance and there are a few "steamy" moments but nothing too graphic. The first person story is about Princess, a 20 something rising vocalist from Guam. The glamour and glitz of Hollywood and life among the rich and famous is described as well as the cut-throat struggles to be a success. Lots of social media involved and it was pretty interesting. Of course there is lots of drama. It was a pretty decent distraction read.

thank you for the recommendations - I have put Recursion and Dark Matter on Hold and it appears that he has a new coming out this year and I have put it on hold also - Upgrade

I received Recursion yesterday, from the library, and tried to read it but just couldn't do it.... there was just no joy and good feelings and so I gave it back so the other 9 people on the waiting list could have it.

I read "Eruption" which is a new book that was conceived by the late Michael Crichton. His widow took the unfinished work to James Patterson to finish it. It is a page turning thriller about a volcanic eruption in Hawaii. Like all of Crichton's work, there is lots of scientific and technical information about volcanoes. There is also a government cover-up which turns a normal natural event into something much deadlier as in an extinction event. Very exciting read and I can see a movie coming from this one!

Read another thriller this weekend called "Disturbing the Bones" by Andrew Davis and Jeff Biggers. This political thriller begins when an archaeological survey in Southern Illinois uncovers the remains of a Black activist woman who disappeared in 1978. Her detective son is determined to solve the mystery. The investigation leads to a sinister plot by a powerful ex-military general that could start WWIII. Lots going on in this book and I got a little bogged down in the middle but the end is crazy good!

That sounds like something I might like. Got to check that out.

I just finished "The Kaiju Preservation Society", by John Scalzi. It's a new novel, rather short, about scientists visiting a sort of parallel-universe Earth with a very different (somewhat nuclear-powered!!!!) native biology, where the "dinosaurs" survived. I liked it: imaginative, interesting premise; likeable characters, and often humorous.

Needing a break from the doomsday stuff, I read "A Jingle Bell Mingle" by Julie Murphy and Sierra Simone. Obviously a Christmas romance and worthy of a Hallmark movie if the Hallmark channel was "X rated." LOL This was a fun read full of quirky characters and hilarious writing though there is some tragedy and sadness as well. There's a lot of descriptive love-making which is usually not my preference but the story was sweet and who can resist a Christmas story in a town called Christmas Notch? And there's a cat! :D

you had me at X-rated LOL

I have put it on HOLD and it says 12 weeks so unlikely it will arrive before Christmas although I do get a lot of jump the line offers so maybe....

The authors have a couple more books that are Christmas themed and I am going to search the library online for those.

I just found out via Goodreads that "A Jingle Bell Mingle" is the third book in a series so the other Christmas books should have been read first. Oh well. I do this quite a bit! Find a book in a series and have to go back.

I recently started RFK Jr's "The Real Anthony Fauci". A real eye opener, but quite depressing!

I haven't read that, and don't plan on it. My expectation is that it's full of misinformation.

"In 2021, researchers identified Kennedy as one of the “Disinformation Dozen,” or the top 12 most prolific spreaders of COVID-19 misinformation online."

Back to the dark and heavy stuff with a true crime book by Deb Miller Landau called "A Devil Went Down to Georgia: Race, Power, Privilege, and the Murder of Lita McClinton." Back in 1987 a young Black woman named Lita McClinton was going through a messy divorce from her wealthy white husband, Jim Sullivan. Then she is shot dead answering the door of her Atlanta home. The book documents the investigation and how Sullivan used his wealth and white privilege to escape justice for 20+ years. Good read that is very compelling and deals with a lot of issues.

The Covenant of Water
by Abraham Berghesse.
4.5 stars. This book was great. Maybe not as great as Cutting For Stone (by the same author).
Sort of sad at points but had a very satisfying ending. It is over 700 pages long so it takes a while to get to the end. But it's worth it.
