The man who died twice was the second and must be read before. That is the 4th in the series. It will be confusing if not read in order. Just saying.

Read "Deceptions" by Kelley Armstrong, the third of the Cainsville series. I have really enjoyed these books and I am totally sucked into this fantasy/romance/mystery series. There are two more books then a couple of what are called "novellas" that are the newest ones. In this book, Olivia finds out the truth about her birth parents so part of her story is finished but there is a lot more for her to learn about her heritage and the unusual inhabitants of Cainsville. Her romance with Ricky is going strong and her friendship with Gabriel has its ups and downs. Good fun!

I read "Requiem for a Mouse" by Miranda James. It was in the new books section and there was a cat on the cover. :D It is part of a series and I am pretty sure I have read at least one other one because the main characters seemed familiar. It is a "cozy mystery" about a middle-aged gentleman who works as an archivist in a college library. He has cats, one of them is a Maine Coon who goes everywhere with him. As is always the case in these types of books, he gets involved in a murder mystery. The characters are enjoyable and it was a quick read.

The Familiar
The Familiar (Hardcover)
by
Leigh Bardugo (Goodreads Author)

Just finished the Familiar. It had gotten good reviews and a recommendation by my sister. Also I liked all the other books by this author. But for me, it didn't quite live up to MY expections. Perhaps I set them too high.

It's a historical fiction set in The Spanish Golden Age. And it's fantasy with magic (or miracles). Lots of stuff going on. One issue I had with it was I had trouble keeping the characters straight. Maybe because their names were Spanish or more likely it's because the author called each character by several different names.

it has all the elements I like in a story: magic; mystery; history; and some romance.
The characters are all well developed. It's also set in a place and time that I'm not particularly familiar with.

I'll give it 4 stars.
But if you are thinking of reading something by Leigh Burtago, I would go with a different book. Maybe Ninth House,

I set a goal for 2024 to read 15 books and I am 4 behind schedule!!! uh oh :0
I'm halfway done with ACOSF by sjm, I am 75% done with Zodiac academy book 7, and I've got a couple chapters into a couple other books. Looking for recs for books I can breeze through quickly.

Today I finished "Same As It Ever Was" by Claire Lombardo. This 500 page novel was not light reading. Another new book I picked up just browsing. This is the story of Julia, a 57 year old wife and mother who has been married for 25 years to Mark. They have 2 children, Ben 24, who is about to get married to his pregnant girlfriend and Alma, 17 who is graduating from high school. They live a "perfect" life in the suburbs and are upper-middle class. This book jumps back and forth in time, describing Julia's life. There is a lot of sadness and drama and Julia puts on a good act while struggling with her past. This is an emotional read dealing with relationships and family. The writing is compelling. I was crying at the end. I will look for the author's other book, but not right away.

They have a space on Reddit right now for people who need short books to read to reach their goal. I saw it last week.

my own personal recommendation is the Penric & Desdemona Novellas
The kindle versions are cheap on Amazon. and you can get some of them for free at the library. At the library they are usually packaged in groups of three as hardcovers. hoopla has a lot of them as audio books for free. Your library may even have them as Kindle books to borrow. About 100 pages each.

I just finished another audio book, Funny Story, By Emily Henry.
If it was a movie it would be a rom-com.
Do they have a fiction category for rom-coms?
Anyway not my usual fare. But I have been reading a lot of mysteries and fantasies that include some romance. This book was recommended in a number of places. Including the NYT. Plus it was immediately available - no waiting.
I liked it a lot. especially since it had some pretty good life lessons incorporated in the content.
However it did have fairly long descriptions of sex - which I don't have much patience for.
The narrator, Julia Whelan, was really good. She is an award winning book narrator and I may look for some more books read by her. She really brought the characters to life.

The vacation was like a fun, strange soap opera. Fun, confusing, so much going on, really hard to put down.
Starting on this one in a little bit today.
That sounds good! I will add it to my list of "to read."
