Literature What are you currently reading?

Just finished the Icarus Needle. A sci fi adventure story. the 5th book in the series. Sixth if you count the Icarus Hunt which is the introduction to the saga.

Its by Timothy Zahn who is most famous for his Star War novels that I have not read. but I like his Quadrail series, sci fi mysyteries , And his Cobra books which are military stuff. Sci fi mysteries are sort of rare. And the Quadrail series if a homage to Noir detectives, Hitchcock, and any murder mystery on a train.

Anyway, the end of the Icarus Needle leaves it open for at least another book in the series. or maybe more. I'm kind of hoping that he wraps this up. I'm getting tired of them.

I just finished "Paradise 1" by David Wellington. This is the first book in a new sci-fi trilogy. This was a big book at nearly 700 pages and is hardcore sci-fi horror (think Alien). It is pretty gruesome and i almost stopped reading it but carried on and got into it. There is a lot of technical computer stuff like AI's that run the ships. This is nothing new but this book takes it to a whole other level. It's got some out there ideas and it was really good. Unfortunately the library does not have book two which was released in November of this year. Hopefully they will order it. This is sometimes an issue with series.

This afternoon I read "My Time to Stand" by Gypsy-Rose Blanchard with Melissa Moore and Michele Matrisciani. This is a memoir of the woman who killed her mother (her boyfriend did the actual murder) who had abused her for her whole life. Her mother had the mental disorder called Munchausen by proxy. I am sure most of you have heard about this story as it was all over the media back in 2015. Gypsy-Rose was released on parole last December. This book was very interesting as she describes the horrible things her mother did to her and how it affected her. She also provides information about her mother's background. It is just mind boggling what Gypsy went through and how she has somehow survived to be able to tell the story.

^ I'm about to start reading it as it was only £2.99 on Kindle and I've been very good at not buying as many books this year. :)

I think I know the bit you mean! I am stopping for a while as it made me feel sick.

I am half way through three books at the moment. That sci-fi one, a book called Wintering (non-fiction) and a book called The 12 Strange Days of Christmas, I will finish the xmas one today for obvious reasons.

I did delete some books I started (but am not interested in) from my kindle too.

I needed something light so I picked up another cozy mystery in the new books section at the library. This is a Christmas themed book called "Death of a Gingerbread Man" by Lee Hollis. It is part of a series (of course) but worked as a stand alone. Quick easy read, decent mystery and quirky characters. Also ginger recipes throughout the book which is cool. I have seen this before in these type of books when they are about bakers and cooks.

The Man Who Died Twice has arrived so I will read that over the next day or so.

Finished this and loved it and now have to wait again for the 4th one to arrive. Such a great group of olders.

I am now reading Nora Roberts' latest - Mind Games - she writes so many books and they are all so good - not sure how she does it as she is now 74, I stand sit in awe. There is a major paranormal element to this great book about love and family.

Today I read another book picked up in the new books section. It is "Taken by the Shawnee" by Sallie Bingham. This is historical fiction about the author's ancestor who was captured by the Shawnee in 1779. The saga of Margaret was part of Ms Bingham's growing up but it wasn't until an actual written account was discovered that she started researching and then decided to tell the story with fictionalized content. Fascinating and quick read!

I read a book called The Wolves of Willoughby Chase. I hadn't read that in 40 years as I read it at school. I really enjoyed rereading it again.

The Year of the Witching - again I thought someone here recommended it but I can't find a reference - it is a bit of a tough read but somewhat interesting so far.
