Literature What are you currently reading?

I picked up John Grisham's Skipping Christmas book at the library and only realized, about 4 chapters in (because the story seemed very familiar), that the movie Christmas with the Kranks was based on this book - who knew?

Still reading Stone Barrington novels too and realized yesterday that there are over 60 of them o_O I am somewhere in the high twenties in the series.

I have just finished "Two Good Dogs" by Susan Wilson. I highly recommend this book! It is the story of Adam and Chance, his therapy pitbull rescued from the fighting life. Other main characters are Skye and her teen daughter, Cody, starting a new life, trying to leave the past behind and Mingo, a street kid and his dog Dawg another fighting pitbull. This is a story of second chances and redemption. I loved it! I am looking for her other books, many of them have "dog" in the title.

I am happy to report that I found several Susan Wilson dog books at the library and have reserved 2 of them. One is Adam's back story which I was hoping to find as the book I just finished made reference to his past but did not explain anything.

I just finished "One Good Dog" which I should have read before the other one but I didn't know! The was the story of how Adam and Chance got together and has a lot more of the dog's perspective. I forgot to mention that the dog takes part in telling the story. This book was much "heavier" and I actually liked it better.

I read "Natural Disaster" this afternoon. It is by Ginger Zee who is the meteorologist for ABC News. She is the person you see at all the weather disasters. The book is about her life; she calls herself a natural disaster. It was really good and I am looking forward to reading her new book which just came out.

Just finished "We Were Never Here" by Andrea Bartz. This thriller sucked me in and was an amazing ride! Told in first person, it is the story of Emily and Kristen, best friends since college. On a vacation in Chile, a tragic accident (or was it?) happens that is eerily similar to a previous incident on another trip. As the questions mount up, Emily (narrator) wonders how well does she really know her "bestie." I couldn't put this book down and will look for more by this author.

Just started reading this yesterday - thank you for the recommendation.

Finished "The Dog Who Saved Me", another Susan Wilson book. Similar plot to the other books but this one had more "substance" I guess you could say. I liked it and will continue to look for her other books. I am waiting for the library to find a few reserves now. In the meantime, I have some books I purchased to read.

I'm just finishing up A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik. It just came out in 2020. I accidentally checked out it's sequel before I realized there was a book one. I wonder if this is going to be the first of a long series. I loved her Teremaire series. and there were about 10 of those.

Novik is an extremely prolific writer, pumping out about a book a year for the last 15 years. Plus a whole bunch of short stories. all of her stuff fits into the Specutlative Fiction category. and maybe even the YA category.

The Teremaire series is an alternate history. the Napoleonic wars - but with dragons. Her other books are retelling fairy tales. so these new books are quite a divergence.

A Deadly Education takes place in a school for magical children. Sounds like Hogwarts, but this is the evil deadly version. The story telling slowed down in places when there had to be explanations. World building. I expect the second book to be faster paced. I've already put it on hold.

I am currently reading another Tim Dorsey novel called "No Sunscreen for the Dead." It is another of the series of books about Serge Storms who is a crazy murdering Florida history buff. These books are so over the top nonsense that make you chuckle out loud.

still slogging through the Stone Barrington books - up to around 45 now 📖

decided to drop reading this series as it is just too awful... I really tried to finish it but it finally lost all credibility

Did read The Mystery of Mrs. Christie by Marie Benedict yesterday and that was very interesting. It is based on an actual incident in the life of Agatha Christie and I enjoyed it a lot.

I have always liked Maeve Binchey and so I decided to go back and read her very first book, thinking I had read them all already - obviously I hadn't because it doesn't seem familiar - Light a Penny Candle is the name and I am quite enjoying it.

I have spent all day reading this book: "I Take My Coffee Black" by Tyler Merritt. I had never heard of him but he is a well known entertainer. This book is so amazing! It is a memoir, a history book, and a social commentary on being a black man in America. It was just released in Sept. 2021 and is very timely. I was moved to tears at times. There are videos Tyler has made but I can't quite face watching them right now. I have to "decompress" from the emotion of the read. Highly recommended!
