What is a personal attack?

I think it's important to be critical of moderators without it being considered a personal attack.

Well, my posts in this thread were deleted, not for being a personal attack, but for being off topic.

You'll usually get an alert that says the post was deleted and a very brief explanation as to why.

I had a post deleted that was polite but critical of a Mod. No email explanation - just 'poof' gone.

I agree! So make sure to voice your criticism in a way that does not get perceived as personal attack ... :D
Where, though? If I voice my criticism in the thread where either the awful moderating is occurring, or the moderator is acting completely unprofessional, the post gets deleted for being off-topic.

Yes, that would be off-topic. You can private message myself or Aery, or you can start a thread in the Announcements, Questions and Feedback forum.

I would say - having read Mischief's deleted posts - that indeed, pointing out that user x often personally attacks other users is not a valid answer to the question "What constitutes a personal attack" and as such "off topic".
I'm very confused but I was just going for some comic relief with my post, anyway.

Ha, if it was the intent to shame me then it certainly missed the mark.:p

If that was the intent of this thread then I have to say clearly that I'm not remotely ashamed or sorry for defending Muslims, people like my stepfamily, my neighbours, my ex-manager, well, you get the idea.

I don't think it is realistic to expect people to post in discussions as if they have forgotten some of the comments that have been said before, on the same subject, on the same forum. If posters make certain comments and then contradict themselves later, it is reasonable that some people might challenge them. The thread I referred to wasn't even old either, it was from 2015.

Because this thread was likely started to shame Moll Flanders for her bringing up an old thread with Callie girl in the Trump thread.
No, that's not it :) But welcome back :)

I tend to agree with this.

This has inspired me to read up on "appeal to hypocrisy"-style arguments a bit. It seems that formally, bringing your opponent's inconsistencies into a discussion can be considered an ad hominem fallacy (*), especially if your objective for doing so is to invalidate your opponent's argument, and / or you are doing it to show that their motivations are different than what they claim. If, on the other hand, you're bringing up your opponent's inconsistencies in an attempt to help them get their thinking straight on the subject, and not to invalidate the argument they're making, then that's not fallacious.

Whether or not VV should include "appeal to hypocrisy"-style arguments in our definition of 'personal attack' is a different question.

* a type of logical fallacy, and the major class of personal attacks

It was a personal attack but not for some perceived hypocrisy (which was her excuse for posting it), but as a form of retribution. Based on the comment she posted for me after claiming that I was insulting Muslims, it looked like it was punishment for my comments about Trump supporters. I have her on ignore so I don't have the exact wording of the post but it was along the lines of "I guess now you'll think twice about slagging on Trump supporters". You should be able to find the exact wording in the thread.

Why would I want to "punish" anyone for insulting Trump supporters? I've said some rude things about some of them on here too. I was pointing out that insulting Muslims is not that different to some of the bigoted things that Trump supporters are saying.

I don't know how anyone can be so self-involved that when someone pulls them up for saying a comment that will probably insult 2 billion Muslims, they take it as a personal attack. It's not about you.

Calliegirl is one of the least self-involved people I've ever met.

What does that have to do with her comment insulting Muslims?

She could be the most adorable person in the world but she still said something insulting. I just don't understand why she doesn't just say sorry (not to me obviously, to Muslims) or explain that she was either in a bad mood that day or that she has changed her mind/ become less ignorant since then.

Actually, I don't know why I'm even asking Mischief (or Mlp) for a sensible answer. She seems to direct her hatred towards different people on here depending on her mood, lol.

Maybe I am silly or foolish for hoping this but i wish people would all be happy again. The elites want us all fighting with each other, it is part of their game plan.. divided, fractured communities mean weaker human communities and that is excellent for them... weaker communities do not fight oil and fracking companies as efficiently, or fight big banks, and sadly they have been creating chaos for many years, dividing people into left and right and then cultivating ideologies and messing with peoples heads until nothing works properly anymore.

I am not suggesting anyone do anything or feel anything different but that is how I am feeling at this time.

MOD POST
This thread is about the definition of a personal attack. It's not a place to try and make personal attacks, or accuse others of making personal attacks. Please try to stay on topic, or I will delete your posts and ban you from the thread.

I do try to be positive, but it's hard as I often hear or read about people saying horrible things about people I love.

This thread has become a complete train-wreck, but I'll try to do something productive with it ...

So should we say this is an example of an ad hominem abusive - trying to a invalidate the argument by attacking the opponent's character? (Category 1 in my other post.) Or is it more an ad hominem circumstantial - trying to invalidate an opponent's argument by pointing to their real or perceived circumstances? (Category 3 in my other post.)

I'm not sure. It's a real pickle.

I think I will join this forum again under a slightly different username and agree with Moll. :ooal:

Eta - I'm not a total loser and obviously I won't join up under a different name. People here have just told me not to be so sarcastic!

Of course I'm mlp. Did you think it was a big secret?

I haven't agreed with anything I posted as mlp, but if you need to agree with yourself, be my guest.

What?:confused:o_O

I really don't care either way, I realised quite a while ago, but didn't want to make a fool of you by saying who you were from VB. I tend to feel empathy for old women as I still think about my grandmothers.

ETA - sorry for any offence, older women, not old, old is considered an insult now, apparently.
