What's in your Garden?

Someone is eating my rhubarb- and it's still really small! :dismay:

I thought I'd move my questions here.... So, @Val & @Mischief ... what do asters like? I mean, this plastic pot they're in seems far too small... I know they're meant to be planted in the earth, not trapped in this tiny pot... and we do have the "flower gardens" next to the house & next to the driveway, that actually shares a property line with the neighbors... they've planted a couple things, but our sh*t is always untended... although the two rose bushes that my father's mother planted are still going strong.... Any advice on how to prune those back into shape is most welcome.... (Having a flashback now of when I was standing on a wobbley rock, as a child, watering one of the rose bushes with a squirt-gun... rock wobbled too much, and I fell into the rose bush... and was literally stuck there.)

Maybe it's time we made peace.... :zen: I'll be smart & protect myself, but still preserve their beauty for many more years to come. :rose:

I'll try to take pictures when they bloom, maybe someone here can tell me how best to care for them....

And how about starting new roses from old? o_O

How to Grow Asters
Well, maybe these are not the best articles, but the other articles are much more clueless. :???:
Growing Asters as Houseplants

As many of you know, my mother has gotten many free gifts from the casino(s)... I finally dug out one of them:

I think this is just what a novice like me needs, for starters... it looks like "Baby's First Gardening Set".... LMAO :p

And I gasped when I saw the sunflower seeds.... I LOVE sunflowers!! <3 I know they need full sun, so I was trying to figure out which side of the house to plant them.... but then I noticed a totally unused patch of the flower garden closest to the garage that should be perfect. :)

I thought my arugula would be safe if grown in the backyard high off the ground. Bunnies don't seem to go back there. But the squirrels decided to mess around in the dirt, and my delicate little seedlings were destroyed. Only two lived. So I planted more seeds and then built a sort of "cage" for the container out of chickenwire. I don't know how to take it back off when it's time to harvest, but I'll figure that out later.

Then, I put out one of my pea plants and one bok choy plant in the container, which I then covered with plastic netting. I'll wait and see how those do. If they're fine by the time I come back on Monday (I'm going away this weekend), I'll put out the rest of my plants. The tomato plants are staying inside for now.

Oooh, shasta daisies! Those are pretty.

I've also planted sunflower seeds this year. Hopefully they'll come up okay...

Stumbled upon this, wanted to save it for later (it's late), so I'm planting it here....

ETA: Also, I saw a few green somethings in the big pot (wildflower seeds) that I put outside.... We've been getting quite a bit of rain, though, so I put it on the porch for the time being.... Still haven't planted the sunflower seeds or re-planted the asters (bees like those too, I guess)... it's been rainy & mucky & I really don't know what I'm doing. LOL

The asters are inside (gloomy, not good) along with the two herbs I planted (thyme & basil)... no herbal activity as of yet....

Not in my garden yet, but I bought six tomato plants, different varieties, from our Master Gardener Plant Sale, for $10.50. I’ll get them in the ground this weekend. I also have organic garlic to plant.

I just put a rhubarb plant in the backyard as well as a climbing flower (wisteria, I think it is). Then I used bricks to section it off from the rest of the yard and put down cedar mulch. Some of the grass seed is sprouting. I put down more grass seed today. Oh, and I finally built an upside-down tomato planter and put up a hook for it in the backyard. I'm using it to grow a yellow plum tomato plant.

In the front, I planted a climbing hydrangea and moved the hosta from the back corner to the front of the garden bed. I haven't decided where to plant the hot pepper plant. I may put that in the backyard.

I have peppermint, spearmint, chives, lemon balm, fennel, sage, parsely, and basil in my herb bed. I also have walking onions, red onions, rhubarb, bell peppers, red beets, carrots, sunflowers, spaghetti squash, swiss chard, spinach, garlic, bush beans, jalapeno peppers, lavender, sweet peas, and cherry tomatoes. I know I am forgetting something. Well, I don’t cultivate the mulberries or black raspberries, but they grow here. Hopefully next year I will build another 4-5 garden beds, which will cover my entire city lot.

Yesterday I planted dill seeds in the garden plot. The grape plant is on year 3, so it's supposed to bear fruit this year. The leaves are coming in already! And I harvested a crap ton of chives. They are growing like crazy in my plot, so I dug some up by the roots and planted them in the backyard.

I put more plants in the front garden this week: lupins, bee balm, harebells, and an elderberry bush. And the sunflower seedlings are still doing well. I'm excited about those.

Ok, good to know. I have some lupin seeds, too. Maybe I'll plant some in the garden plot.
