OSes Windows 10: Free upgrade for Win 7 & 8 users

That's really too bad bean... The guide you followed worked for me after assuring I had all the Windows updates.. Especially KB3035583

Btw... How long did it take the CMD file to finish running? It seems like it's in a loop, then it finishes after about half an hour

From what I read, the loop is an indication that you don't have the required KB files loaded. I initially had the loop, but instead of waiting, I did a Windows update (even though I knew I had the KB files already loaded) and then I ran through the process again, and didn't experience a loop. It just ran for a second and sais "Success". I then rebooted, but still didn't get the icon.

I even tried this program in the link below (From a dropbox account) that gives you three options to autmatically get the icon, but none of them worked. So, at this point I'm done.

Apparently it just seems like a loop. I waited until it finished, it took probably 30 to 45 minutes, then after a reboot it worked.

Does anybody know for certain how it will work for those in the insider preview for upgrading to 10 when it's fully released?

I've read that I would have to roll back to 8.1 and then re-upgrade to the release version. It's not a problem if that's the case, but is it the official stance from MS or is it just speculation from the masses?

Would be easier though to just upgrade to release version from the preview version using the Windows 8 key that I already have stored in the BIOS.

It's actually said that Insiders will get the upgrade first. So I assume that to mean that Insiders get the full version without having to revert to Windows 7/8/8.1

It seems to be saying that the full release will be activated through the Microsoft Account of those in the Insider Preview as opposed to a key? That would be so much easier.

I have a bit of a hard time with the wording of these articles. This part confuses me:

article said:
Even better, once you have upgraded, you can then do a clean install of the operating system from an ISO and you will still be active. The product activation will be tied to your Microsoft Account.

If I've already upgraded, why would I need to do a clean install?

I get what you're saying. I think it's just an extra convenience that's pretty cool. Having an ISO would mean not needing to take an upgrade path in the situation of having to re-install. You have the full retail version, all you have to do is using the new ISO to create a DVD or bootable USB thumb stick.

It being connected to your Microsoft/MSN account is indeed pretty great too... I had the same questions in my head that you had to tell the truth :)

Ok cool. I was wondering if it wasn't just to have the ISO in case you need it. Anyway, not much longer until it's released anyway, so I guess we'll all know for sure then.

Yep, us Insiders will be the first to know. We get it before anyone else :) Just a little over a week to go....

Pretty funny, they basically just said to Insiders "Guess what, if you're running Insider build 10240 you have already been running the final version of Windows 10 for the last few weeks!" Doh didn't think that's what they meant by Insiders getting it first lol

Yeah I read that. I'm still trying to find out if I have access to the .iso file without upgrading from 7/8.1 first since, you know I did that already for the Insider Preview.

Not in the traditional sense. What you do is you use their tool to make a bootable thumb stick

Cool! I did download the tool from the MS website but I haven't done anything with it. So I shouldn't need to "accept" the upgrade within the first year since I essentially already did?

The year is to initially claim the license... There's actually no time limit, if you have your hard copy on a thumb stick :) I really like installing an OS from thumb stick btw, so much faster than a DVD, especially with USB 3.0

For anyone getting error 80240020 when trying to start the upgrade to Windows 10 do the following:

  1. Go into the directory "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and delete everything inside.
  2. Run a command prompt as administrator and type: wuauclt.exe /updatenow
  3. Try getting updates again

It's been fine, I have no complaints at all about it, and so far the upgrade has been great on Chryssie's computer too.
