News 2016 U.S. Presidential election - the highs and lows

The part I bolded.

--------------
Re Social Media:

Michael Moore expressed sadness that Bernie won't get the Democratic nomination, but said he stands firmly behind Hillary as the nominee and wants help from his fans to defeat Trump. HUNDREDS of people went on Facebook to basically scream at him and castigate him for being a treasonous sellout, among other names they gave him. And these are people who see his movies and usually defend him from his "regular" critics. This election cycle has brought out a lot of meanness and ugliness that I don't remember seeing in past elections. I'm surprised I don't have an ulcer.

I'm sorry - I should have clicked on your quote of my post, and then I would have seen what you bolded.

But, yeah, I think that (apart from this year), Republicans have their primaries and then get on with it, uniting behind the candidate who won, without all of the foot stomping and huffing around about "never in a million years will I vote for X" that the Dems/progressives seem to engage in every presidential election cycle. In fact, apart from this year, I've never heard any Republican say that even in the early parts of the primary season, before it becomes apparent that their preferred candidate is not going to get the nomination.

Obama officially endorses Hillary Clinton - BBC News

Did the HC supporters you knew back then vote in the end for Obama? If I lived in the US I would just vote for the party I supported, rather than the individual personality.

I don't know - the vocal ones were online, and who knows what people actually do, versus what they say....

(I've always lived in heavily Republican areas, so the Dems/progressives I know IRL I could probably count on my fingers (with fingers left to spare), and they are all pretty pragmatic.)

I think it would be a serious mistake to have two women on the same ticket. There needs to be a man for balance.

I'm assuming because of all the people who are afeared of a woman in a leadership position?

Because, of course, no one has ever been concerned about two men on the same ticket, without a woman for balance.

Because having a woman lead the ticket is such a revolutionary idea in the minds of many American voters that they may only accept it if there's also a man on the ticket. I'm trying to think realistically here.

I get your point.

OTOH, Trump facing two women whom he can't intimidate might lead to him blowing up in a really epic way. I mean, this is a man who has gone on a months' long public rampage against a federal judge simply because the judge didn't dismiss the lawsuits against him on a summary judgment motion. (Getting a dismissal on a summary judgment is a very rare thing: the judge has to find that, even if the plaintiffs prove every allegation they have made, they couldn't win as a matter of law.)

I see the newest conspiracy theory is that Google is manipulating search results for Hillary.

I honestly don't know how these people are able to function in society when everywhere they look they see a conspiracy going on.

I just saw another YouGov survey about the US election:

If Hillary Clinton is elected president, do you think the symbolism of a woman American President will have an important positive effect or negative effect on the world, or do you see that as being irrelevant?

It would have a positive effect 44%
It would be irrelevant 36%
It would have a negative effect 7%
Other 1%
Don't know 12%

Some of Bernie's supporters are already claiming Hillary "stole" the nomination from Bernie. They are also saying she "stole" California from him. If she wins in November, the Republicans will most definitely be saying she "stole" the election from Trump. If that happens, that's going to be a lot of butthurt voters. Just like in 2008. :fp:

Hillary's made a few Trump videos. The first one is pretty damn frightening, the second a little more lighthearted.

I gather you're now a Trump supporter.

Hardly.

Blind faith in any candidate is not a good idea.

Incompetence doesn't have to be a factor if your influence is wide and deep. Money, favors, friends in key positions and places, skeletons in someones closet, etc. There are all sorts of ways to get what you want or avoid taking responsibility or blame for your actions.

Of course, it's all the result of a vast right wing conspiracy...
