Are You an Unhealthy Vegetarian ?

I don't eat anything from the avoid-eating-too-much list. I eat a lot of black beans, Tofurky sausage/kielbasa and brown rice.

Tofu is "heavily processed"? And "anything heavily processed shouldn't be consumed"?

Some would argue that that article is garbage, and garbage should not be read. Though I personally wouldn't go that far.

I agree - tofu is by no means "heavily processed."

Hmmmm... I guess according to this incredibly narrow view, I'm pretty healthy. Overall, I'd say that I more healthy than unhealthy, but I also feel like I have pretty good balance on the issue.

In the real world I eat very healthily. In the online vegetarian community, I'm probably a junk food addict :D

I think I eat a fair amount of sugar, a fair amount of white bread/pasta/rice and a fair amount of caffeinated coffee which are probably the only three areas a bit lacking. I eat a BIG variety of food, lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, the majority of food is made from scratch and I eat very little processed vegan food (faux meat, cheese, etc) and not a lot of fat. I was bought up on home cooked food, I forget how much ready-made stuff most people eat.

Anyway I'm fairly happy with how I eat. If I could change anything I would just switch the brown rice/pasta, but they take longer to cook and don't come in big value bags which is annoying. I like sugar and caffeinated coffee though, yum.

I eat pretty well most of the time, but I do have my junky spurts when I indulge in french fries, chips and sweets (mostly baked by me). I like cooking, so most of what I eat is homemade. I've never been a fan of processed/prepared food, as my mom is an excellent cook and we just didn't eat that stuff much. Sometimes I go a little too heavy on the white stuff, like pasta, bread and rice, but I do try to balance it by eating lots of fruit and fresh veggies. I'm a salad nut, so I usually have greens at least once a day, sometimes more.

Yes, I am. I love my veggie meats, junk food, ice cream, soda, yum

Quite the junk-food vegan here. But being a junk-food vegan is way better than being a junk-food omni. If I ate meat, eggs, and dairy, I'm confident I would weigh about 300lbs.

Pretty sure I'd be, too.
But damn, I nearly ate an entire package of vegan cookies just now..

It sucks that i been on a budget and I had a rough time to transit , now with our budget, we are making more measures of me making homemade vegan items and veggie friendly items as I learn a whole new way of getting things.

That sucks that food pantries don't accommodate vegan diets. Or hospitals...
Yeah, omnivores complain we shove our beliefs down their throats, yet they shove cruelty down ours. That's a bit fucked up, isn't it?

The hospital I work for provides meals for vegans. They aren't great, but neither are the omni meals, lol. They will give tons of fresh fruit, which is nice.

Thanks , I have to wait until next week to change stuff, in mean time need to eat what I can get my hands on grrrrrrrrrrr.

Do they at least have canned veggies, rice or beans? Even oatmeal or dry cereals? Pastas? Peanut butter or jelly?

I became vegetarian in my early teens and there were numerous times where my family had to rely on food pantries. Most of the food was expired junk food that was far from being vegan, but there was also a good chunk of vegetarian options like the items I mentioned. I remember eating a lot of pasta with veggies, ramen (without the flavor packs), crackers, cereals, and oatmeal.

I realize that each pantry is different , but hopefully your local pantry has some of these staples.

Is there a Food Not Bombs organization in your area? They serve free vegan meals. Usually on Sundays .

We have rice, canned veggies, lots of canned beans, canned tomato stuff, oatmeal, toasted oats like cherrios , pasta, soups(no vegan or veg friendly) we have tomato soup.

That is unheard of overhere.
I think it started here because of fear of lawsuits, tbh. Sick and injured people need to eat to heal, so we feed them what they will eat. We have lots of patients with different dietary needs (religious, allergy, ethical, etc) and our dietary department is excellent at working with them. I always pop into the veggies' rooms on our floor to ensure they are eating okay, and field questions from the other nurses if their veggie patients aren't eating.
