UK Brexit aftermath/repercussions

Ha, I was listening to a podcast and the man speaking talks about the new JC supporters being vegans, I didn't listen to the whole thing, but it was in the first 15 minutes or so. Labour's indestructibles: Can anything stop the hard left? by The Spectator Podcast
I can see why the Conservative Party's own magazine would find it useful to paint the Labour leadership as being dependent on and beholden to a group of fringe group activists who want to take away the one thing that bring pleasure to the vast majority of voters!

City of London fears May government is shifting towards ‘hard’ Brexit — FT.com
A hard future awaits for Theresa May without a vision for soft Brexit | Anne McElvoy | Opinion | The Guardian
I'm thinking that the Conservative government will be (or is already) very split when it comes to whether we have a hard or soft Brexit.

That's alright then. I thought it might be the ol' horizontal duvet dancin'.

Apparently, it's right wingers who have better sex lives.

Paris, Berlin play down Sarkozy plan to reverse Brexit - Cyprus Mail
France and Germany distanced themselves on Wednesday from a suggestion by French presidential candidate Nicolas Sarkozy that he could reverse Brexit if elected next year by negotiating a new European Union treaty more acceptable to Britain.

Sarkozy, who has raised eyebrows in European capitals recently with his tough rhetoric on immigration, promises to ignore deficit targets and comments playing down climate change, told business leaders in Paris on Tuesday that he was committed to keeping Britain in the EU and had a plan to do so.

If elected in May of next year, he said he would travel to Berlin a day later with the draft of a new EU treaty that he would present to German Chancellor Angela Merkel for approval.

Sarkozy said he would then travel on to London to give the British government an opportunity to drop its promise to take Britain out of the EU following the June 23 Brexit referendum.
(It aint over 'til it's over :D)

Brexit high on agenda at Tory party conference | Europe | DW.COM | 01.10.2016
Less than three months after the vote for Brexit propelled Theresa May into the premiership, she will host her first Conservative conference as leader. The annual gathering of MPs and party faithful will take place in Birmingham from Sunday til Wednesday.
With so much still up in the air - not least, the question of when Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty [the right of any member state to decide to withdraw from the Union in accordance with its own constitutional requirements - the ed.] will be triggered - it is unlikely the Conservative conference will offer much in the way of solid information on the next steps toward Brexit.

"My prediction is we're not going to learn a huge amount about what's going to happen, even though the whole first day is dedicated to talking about Brexit," says Oliver Patel, research associate at the European Institute at University College London. "They'll try to say the right things without really saying anything," he told DW.

Brexit: May to introduce EU repeal bill in Queen's Speech - BBC News
Theresa May has said she is to introduce a "Great Repeal Bill" in the next Queen's Speech which will overturn the act which took the UK into the EU.
The repeal of the 1972 Act will not take effect until the UK leaves the EU under the process for quitting the bloc known as Article 50.
(And what happens if the bill does n't get passed?)

Theresa May will trigger Article 50 in first quarter, probably before the end of March next year.

British pound drops to 31-year low on fears of ‘hard’ Brexit - France 24
Britain’s pound slumped to a three-decade low on Tuesday as concerns over Brexit were compounded by the renewed strength of the dollar on resurgent U.S. interest rate hike expectations.
Sterling was at its weakest since 1985, hit by a growing sense that the UK may be heading for a ‘hard’ Brexit where it severs links to the EU’s single market in favour of total control over immigration.

Lawyers argue Northern Ireland can veto Brexit
Two lawyers in Belfast cited the terms of the historic 1998 peace deal on Tuesday in arguing Northern Ireland has the right to veto Britain's decision to leave the EU.

"Sovereignty over constitutional affairs has been ceded" with the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, according to lawyer Ronan Lavery.

The barrister is representing a cross-party group of politicians in their legal challenge against the result of the June 23 referendum which saw Britain vote to leave the European Union.

"The people of Northern Ireland have control over constitutional change, it cannot be imposed upon the people of Northern Ireland," he added.

Northern Ireland and Scotland voted to remain in the EU, but the result was swung towards Brexit by a leave vote in England and Wales.
(What a mess! NI and Scotland could remain in the EU but England and Wales would be out? Jeez! )

Diane James quits as Ukip leader after just 18 days as successor to Nigel Farage
Ukip leader Diane James has quit the role after just 18 days, sources have said.

Ms James said on Tuesday night that she does not "have sufficient authority, nor the full support" of Ukip MEPs and officers to reform party.

In a statement she said: "It is with great regret that I announce that I will not be formalising my recent nomination to become the new leader of the party with the Electoral Commission.

One senior party member told The Telegraph that Ms James has felt uneasy about her new role ever since she was spat at on a train station platform after winning the leadership contest.

We now know the dark truth about Theresa May's Brexit strategy
Article 50, we now know, will be deployed by March. That’s when the two year negotiating window will begin. It is widely agreed that two years to negotiate new terms with the European Union is not long enough. Article 50 was designed in this way, to confer advantage on the bloc, not the leaving member. There are presidential elections in France and Germany after that point, effectively writing off a large portion of that precious time.

But Theresa May knows, or rather hopes, that it will mean that the worst of the immediate post-exit horror stories might be out of the way by the time the election comes round. Out of the single market. Out of the customs union. No interim Norway-style arrangement to at least extend the negotiating period, when the palpably obvious becomes palpable reality: that the free trade deals meant to replace our single market membership cannot, will not, and never were going to be completed in anything like the time. What we must have instead is a blitzkrieg attack of economic friendly fire now, so by 2020, some of the smoke has cleared and we’ve all got a bit more used to living among the ruins.

Cheap homes! I wish ...
(What a mess! NI and Scotland could remain in the EU but England and Wales would be out? Jeez! )
I doubt that would be possible without breaking up the UK itself. And that seems even more unlikely than the outcome of the EU referendum.

UK looks for transitional trade deal after Brexit — FT.com

The Conservative party conference has been so dull!:D I almost fell asleep when Philip Hammond gave his speech. Ruth Davidson (the Scottish Conservatives leader) is introducing Theresa May today. I read TM will be trying to appeal to working class people. Theresa May to attack politicians who sneer at 'patriotic' working class voters concerned about migration

ETA - I think a lot of working class people will be put off by Jeremy Corbyn recently saying that he more or less supports uncontrolled immigration to Britain.
