Do you believe in spanking as a form of discipline?

The notable exception was the one time my father hit him on the butt. They had been outside, and my nephew came running in, distraught. My mother called outside and asked my father what he had done to him, and he said he had given him one swipe on the butt, after repeatedly telling him to not try to bend the cats' tails and being ignored.

If someone is abusing an animal or weaker child that is the one time I can really understand that form of discipline/method to interrupt the behavior. When I read about boys terribly abusing helpless animals I admit that I'd like to see those boys get some hurt back. And I do not believe that people only enact violence only because they've been shown violence. I think it's often enough just an inability or unwillingness to empathize with others' pain.

I agree.

'Spanking' does sound funny, but eventually explaining things to Americans gets tiring so it's easier to just use terms they understand.

To clarify on my earlier post: for me being hit was more of an 'immediate cessation of action' thing than a punishment, per se. Punishment of any kind has the opposite effect on me (and I'd guess a lot of people) to what is intended. There were also a few times when 'hit' turned into 'beating' but while vaguely interesting stories those aren't really important since they're so blatantly useless overreaction.

I don't really see the difference between someone making me look like Hitler or making a cat look like Hitler. *shrug*

Well, because the context was that yours was that your behavior was like Hitler, and the cats are based on pure appearance. The first is harder for me to find funny.

Of course people can do whatever they want, I'm just talking about the effect on me.

Well that photo I used was a picture of me photoshopped by a friend as a joke, and I don't really see the difference between someone making me look like Hitler or making a cat look like Hitler. *shrug*

Well, I think that the joke was that you might act like Hitler in moderating, while some cats happen to be born with markings that make them resemble Hitler. His appearance might be something to joke about; his actions were and are no joke.

For a lot of younger people, Hitler seems like ancient history. For other people, there's an immediacy to his evil - he is, after all, still within living memory, and many who were born after his death nevertheless have close relatives who died in concentration camps or who were otherwise affected. And that means that some of us have a sensitivity to jokes about Hitler that some others might have difficulty understanding. I recently saw some long lost color photos of Hitler and his coterie. They reminded me of how recent all those horrors are - for much of my childhood, black and white photos were the norm. Those photos bothered me in ways I would have difficulty verbalizing.

The mods should have some kind of contest to see who could rack up the most accusations of facism and infringement on freedom of speech - those seem to be standby insults for pretty much everything. :D

P.S. I didn't intend my post as an accusation, just an explanation as to why some of us are more sensitive about Hitler than others may be.

(since when does the spankee pull down their own pants and stand there? It's like an invitation).
