TV & Film Movie Lounge

We watched Olympus Has Fallen last night through Netflix. It was not good. Plenty of opportunity for poking fun of the script and the lines, though, which I think is what Jen was after.

"John Wick" ... solid revenge action thriller with Keanu Reeves.

John Wick (2014) - IMDb

Badass guy who had gone good before kills xxx other badass guys for killing his dog.

Definitely not bad, if you like that kind of movie, appreciate a rather basic storyline and lots of gratuitous violence. Throw in Willem Dafoe and Lohn Leguizamo (in an, unfortunately, very small role) and some nice cars ('69 Mustang and '68 Charger, as well as the placement of newer products that - so far unsuccessfully - try to continue that proud heritage)

Best regards,
Andy

"The Boxtrolls"

Stop-action animation movie (presumably, possibly it was also CG?) that I did not like very much.

So why did I not like it?

1) The story was very one-dimensional (sneaky trolls wearing cardboard boxes living in the underground get hunted down by "humans", and in the end the humans more or less see the error of their ways and accept them - or possibly not, that is not so clear)

2) The story was in may cases very scary, definitely not something for smaller children to watch. But, it was in a gratuitously scary way

3) The story takes place in a town called "Cheesebridge", and the highest achievement possible there is to wear a white hat (mayor and town council) and to indulge in the tasting of various cheeses. The villain has a cheese allergy, so it is immediately clear, that he never can be eligible for higher honours. Yes, they somehow show that these good citizens take their cheese addiction too far ("What, a child was abducted by the boxtrolls? How unfortunate. Let's discuss it tomorrow. What do you say? They might also want to steal our cheeses??? How OUTRAGEOUS!!!" and in a second scene where the mayor gives a speech to the "Cheese lovers guild" and explains that they decided to use the money collected for a new Children's hospital instead to acquire a giant cheese, the "Briehemoth"), but the basic idea is that cheese is the highest achievement of human civilization. What is it with the cheese? I can only shake my head in sadness.

So, for all these reasons, I did not really like the movie.

Book of life - Animated Movie centering around the "Day of the Dead" in Mexico

Really nice movie, although the contents might be a tad dark for smaller children in some places. Nice animation, Characters basically have the appearance of wooden dolls from a puppet play, as it is about a story that is recounted to "present-day" kids in a museum.

The two rulers of the "Land of the Remembered" and the "Land of the Forgotten", to which people depart after their death, "La Muerte" and "Xibalba" make a bet, which of the two heroes will win the hand of the heroine. Of course, evil Xibalba does not want to play fair and instead tries to trick the good boy, Manolo, who should be a bullfighter like his father, but wants to become a musician instead.

Nice animation, funny story and good voices (Zoe Saldana, Diego Luna, Channing Tatum, Ron Perlman, Ice Cube). Definitely worth viewing, if you liked, e.g., "The Corpse Bride". Especially the dead (skeletons) are animated quite nicely and not in a very scary way.

Solid WW2 Enigma/Code Breaking movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley.

8 Oscar nominations might be a bit much, but it is a solid movie that is good to watch. Of course, being a huge fan of Benedict Cumberbatch myself, I enjoyed his performance immensely, but also Keira Knightley gave a very good performance and the whole movie was suspenseful and interesting. The only criticism might be that it centered too much on the main 5 or 6 people and neglected everybody else working in Bletchely Park (IIRC, there were lots of people connected to this activity).

Interstellar by Christopher Nolan

Was a bit disappointed after liking other movies made by him, e.g. Inception, Memento, The Prestige.

Too long, logical inconsistencies, sometimes too boring.

The Book of Life is a fantastic movie. Not sure if I mentioned it here before but there's a huge animal rights message as well.

I was actually quite fond of Interstellar in spite of the sometimes implausible bits. Then again I'm a sucker for sci-fi epics.

Chef. It had high ratings but I thought it was meh.
Warning: They show a whole pig being cut apart at the beginning.
