TV & Film Movie Lounge

Some time ago I saw "A Most Wanted Man", one of the last movies starring the late Phillip Symour Hoffmann, based on a recent novel by John Le Carre.

Good - and rather quiet (Le Carre) - movie, slightly different take on the "War on Terror" and the resulting collateral damage.

Also, in a similar vein, "The Reluctant Fundamentalist", directed by Mira Nair, starring Riz Ahmed, Liev Schreiber and Kiefer Sutherland. Also a very good movie, more action, good character development and especially interesting as the perspective is that of an Asian director and writer.

Best regards,
Andy

Living Free.
The end part always makes me cry and remind me of the book where the Adamson's see the cubs for the very last time as they disappear into the wilderness.

Predestination starring Ethan Hawke and based upon the Robert Heinlein story "All you Zombies".

Solid movie, really not bad, can only be described as Epic Time Travel Mindfuck (People who do not appreciate time travel paradoxons will love to hate that one :D )

Best regards,
Andy

Housebound. Dark comedy, a little slow to start but gets better.

White Bird in a Blizzard. Either the acting was terrible, or it was done in some weird style I didn't appreciate. Predictable, skipped most of it.

Copenhagen. It really made Copenhagen look beautiful and now I want to visit. :P I liked a lot of the music too, even though it was in Danish and I didn't know what they were saying, especially the song the girl sang. I have looked it up since and heard it performed by the original group and like it even more. Oh yeah, I liked the movie too.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. Not your typical serial killer or slasher movie, but a very different kind of period movie. I liked it.

Fred & Elsa

English language version with Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer. The critics didn't like it, but it struck me on a personal level and the performances by MacLaine and Plummer are superb.

Insidious. It was horrible, it literally put me to sleep. I finally shut it off half way through because I was tired of nodding off. I usually don't like the done to death "family moves into a house with a spirit/demon/ghost who takes over the mother/father/kid/dog", but I read a review that claimed this one was better done and was actually scary. Nope, it was exactly like the others; boring and predictable.

Dream Lover with a young James Spader. I liked this one much more than that awful one above. It had a not so predictable plot and a bit of suspense.

Fried Green Tomatoes. A classic. :)

In Secret. Another good one. I read that it took quite a few years to get made.

OK, have watched some more movies ...

Birdman ... was quite an awesome movie, wonderful acting, impressive cinematography, very good. A good picture to win the "Best picture" oscar. Highly recommended.

American Sniper ... not bad either, but possibly more interesting for Americans with a faible for hero worship than for people from other nations. Good acting, but the story was a bit boring at times (repetitive).

Joe ... now this was a horrible movie IMO. Like very many Nicolas Cage movies (e.g. "Ghost Rider"), IMO he is not very discerning and backs many crappy projects. Watched this one on the airplane as it claimed to have good reviews, but this is mainly interesting if you want to see idiot people doing idiot things. On top of that, you'll be treated to close-up coverage of butchering a deer, dogfights and some other things not especially appealing to vegans or vegetarians.

Taken 3 ... well, what shall I say? Action movie, not as good as "Taken 2", which was in turn not as good as "Taken". And the original "Taken" was an Action Revenge movie with holes in the plot you could drive a big truck through, at best. There are better such movies out there, e.g. "John Wick".

Kung Fu Jungle ... also on the plane ... Hong Kong Martial Arts action movie with Donnie Yen. If you like well (but, of course, impossibly) choreographed martial arts fighting scenes with lots of special effects and are willing to make concessions on other dimensions like the credibility of the script or the soundness of the storyline, then this is your movie.

Oculus - This was pretty good for a horror movie. Not too gory, not too predictable, suspenseful, and a little bizarre.

I must watch out for this film. I think that I've seen the original one which is called Terese Raquin.

Just watched "The Grand Budapest Hotel".

My, what a wonderful, adorable, charming and funny movie!

Highly advised for everybody who likes a light comedy reminiscent of a bygone era that looks and feels glamorous, but, in hindsight, most likely was not.

Wonderful acting, beautiful pictures, delightful music and an overall very enjoyable experience!

Best regards,
Andy
