News Plant Based/Vegan

From the link @shyvas posted yesterday about the human-caused decline in shark populations:

Shark fin soup has been eaten in China for centuries. It’s a delicacy, thought to have several medicinal benefits. But making the dish—a type of broth with fibrous shark fin noodles and chicken stock—relies on the brutal practice of finning sharks. This usually involves fishers catching them from the ocean, slicing off their fins, and then throwing them back overboard, where they will eventually bleed to death.

I'm no fan of apex predators, or predators generally- but this is beyond weird and wasteful. A later passage in this news item mentions that the rest of the shark is, in fact, eaten in some areas- so it's not as if the rest of the shark isn't edible for some reason. And I was surprised that so many sharks are killed by humans, although I knew "Jaws" hugely exaggerated the threat sharks pose to humans.

I was saying the powdered milk is very expensive - $30 for just 3.5 litres (not even a full gallon) of milk - the regular liquid is very reasonable at $4 for 1.75 litres.

Oh. That is ridiculous.

I just googled and found an oat milk powder in a bag. each bag makes 14 cups of oat milk. It costs $8. So that's.... 2.20 a quart.

There is a documentary that you might want to watch. it's like Cowspiracy but for fishes: Seapiracy. there is a whole chapter on sharks.

How did you work that out? A kilo of powdered milk is the equivalent of 10 litres of liquid. I only use a spoon of powdered milk in a mug of coffee.

I was just going by what they say on their website.

How many servings does one pouch contain?

One pouch can make up to 14 cups or 3.5L of delicious organic oat milk or add a spoonful directly to your beverage to make it last longer!

^^^ It's too bad that Meatless Farm (in Britain) is apparently going out of business, even though I haven't seen their products in my area. I've seen "Beyond Meat" and "Impossible Foods" marketing their items locally, even in mainstream markets such as Price Chopper and Burger King(!!!)- but they've been around for quite some time now in the United States.

Some of the (relatively intelligent) comments on that article wondered why vegan meat substitutes often cost more than the "real thing". Although this bothers me sometimes, I realize that they can't take advantage of mass production and offer their products at lower prices, as meat and dairy producers can. "Vegetarian Times" magazine once had an article about health food stores, explaining how they had a similar problem staying afloat in a relatively small niche market.

There is a new book out - 50 Comebacks For Vegan Kids.

Looks like science has come up with a soft serve ice cream made from beans. I haven't seen any soft serve vegan options here in Canada yet. We have lots of non-dairy ice creams, but all hard.

Soft serve would be nice if places actually serve it. I feel the demand for non-dairy is probably higher than for plant-based meats, which hopefully makes it more appealing to vendors. It would be nice to see this option everywhere they have soft serve ice cream, but that's wishful thinking.
