What do you call satire?

well, while beancounter is still looking it up, I'll post this definition:

Satire is a genre of literature, and sometimes graphic and performing arts, in which vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, corporations, government or society itself, into improvement.[1] Although satire is usually meant to be humorous, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using wit as a weapon and as a tool to draw attention to both particular and wider issues in society.

I dunno, maybe cartoonist think because they have the skill to draw cartoons, it somehow gives them a pass to draw what they like.

I'm not sure what that cartoon is trying to say...

The artist is satirizing different groups to show "See how it feels to be satirized".

But this is a complete fail because:
1. I am not offended
2. And even if I was offended, I wouldn't be motivated to kill other people.

It may not be nice to make fun of others, but it never justifies violence. Never.

I don't think it is a fail in anyway shape or form. In fact I'd you look at the least three images they are very moving.

You could replace Muslims with ira etc etc

And it would still have the same effect

I think that is the point. Humanity and the nuances of our relations with one another are a continual conundrum. I wouldn't say it's a fail though.

Seems like the cartoonist is saying the west should drive Muslims into the sea.

I think partly, with the Middle East, you are dealing with a culture which is a few hundred years behind Europe......Europe wasn't so civilized a few hundered years ago either.

These days we have people being driven to food banks, and the rich get tax breaks...

After I watched a racist comedian, I learned a lesson: If are really, truly funny and smart, you dont have to stoop to hurting and denigrating people, to make a good joke, or make a point, and if you do, then amongst other things, that is sloppy comedy and it shows that your abilities are lacking in that field. And I think that anyone who does offensive cartoons and articles are failing in journalism- journalism is supposed to inform and get people to question things and talk- it isnt supposed to divide people and drive stereotypes.

And it is actually possible to question many aspects of Islam without drawing the Prophet. There is no need for the Prophet to even be in the conversation when it is humans that are the subject, and if people ask you to respect a religious deity or symbol, you are kind of a dick if you ignore them and go ahead anyway. It calls to reason your respect for people who dont share your culture.

It's funny, when I read certain bits from the Koran, and some Muslim posts, I get a sense of purity, and calm. I can almost smell incense, or flowers...I think Islam may be part of God's plan some how.

What should have happened in this situation is this magazine should have been shut down years ago. In New Zealand for example, such a magazine would not be allowed because we have a Race Relations Commission which does not allow it. Our government gets a lot wrong but at least it recognises that there are over 200 different ethnicities living in NZ and it is in everyone's interests to live in relative peace.

I like to read about religions and I have had very positive experiences with all of them. Christianity is probably the number one for me as it is a family religion but I also like Hinduism and Buddhism as I have ancestry which practised these religions.
