I can totally see a Negan/Rick alliance begrudgingly happening. Begrudgingly on Rick's part, I mean. Negan definitely respects him, and is even proud of the influence he has had on him. I don't think Negan could ever be redeemed, not in the conventional sense anyway - he sticks by his principles WAY too much for me to ever think that he'd acknowledge that what he's done is wrong or at the very least not in some way justified. I think he'd be willing to cooperate with Rick, though - he did pretty much come around to Rick's way of seeing things near the end of the war, after all. I think he'd put aside any misgivings in the interest of common welfare. Negan's not personally power hungry or self-interested, otherwise he'd have escaped from the cell long ago when it was left unlocked. I get the impression that he's only taking advantage of this escape opportunity because he thinks he might be able to prove himself to Rick.
Speaking of Spencer - some serious foreshadowing of that brutal moment in the comics. Spencer is already having doubts about whether Alexandria can take on the Saviors, and that'll screw him over in the end.
I also have no doubts that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is the right man for the character. I really, really hope the show does him justice. They've got all the elements in place to do so.
That is what's so great about Negan. Such a three dimensional character, there's definitely multiple layers to him. You need to go to Comixology and buy 145 - 152 so we can talk some more... Somethings coming up that I don't want to spoil for you.
