Literature What are you currently reading?

I just learned that they have made the Boys In The Boat into a movie. It will be out around xmas.
Don't know how good it will be but it is based on a book that I thought was great.
Some of you might want to read it before (or instead of )seeing the movie.

It might be especially poignant because it's about Rowing and if you read or saw Lessons In Chemistry you might want to learn more about the sport of rowing.

The #1 New York Times–bestselling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany and now the inspiration for the PBS documentary “The Boys of ‘36′.”
For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times—the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Judging just by the previews the movie looks great too.

I read an older Harlan Coben that I had bought at a book sale some time ago called "Play Dead." It was originally published in 1990 and re-issued in paperback a few years ago. Being that old it is somewhat dated in that there are no cellphones or internet and they use typewriters. LOL It was a good read though, a very complicated mystery that has you guessing. I did guess one thing but then they twisted it up again. I like his books!

I just finished The Golem of Brooklyn by Adam Mansbach,
One of my friends got it out of one of those Little Lending Libraries that are all over here. She read it and passed it on to me. I'm so glad she did. I really enjoyed the book
The author has co-written three novels with Dave Barry and is very funny.
I didn't think Dave Barry was Jewish. Maybe he is but Mansbach definitely is and many of his books have Jewish themes.
This book is about Len, an art teacher who gets high and decides to make a Golem out of 500 pounds of clay that he has been stealing from his school, 5 pounds at a time for several years. When The Golem is activated he only speaks yiddish. So Len goes go to the local bodega where he thinks the clerk, Miriam, speaks yiddish.
While he is away his friend and dealer comes by and the golem accidentally absorbs a ton of acid. When Len and Miriam gets back the Golem is learning English by watching Curb Your Enthusiasm . that is pretty much the first chapter and it just gets more interesting after that.
I thourougly enjoyed it and I recommend it to anyone who also like odd ball humor.
The author has a lot of other books. I'm going to try and find some more at the library. Maybe I can find one of the one he cowrote with Barry.

Do you guys have Little Free Libraries where you live?
I just looked them up so I could share a picture. The little buildings are sort of expensive. Not sure why but I thought they would be free.

Mysteiries were easier to write before cellphones and the internet.

Nowadays the mystery (or thriller ) writer has to come up with some reason that protagonist does not have a phone.
-battery died
phone broke,
no service,

Can you think of a mystery or thriller that got around the cell phone issue in a creative way?

I discovered another light crime fighter series while browsing in the library. This series is called A Cupcake Bakery Mystery and the one I read, which I think is the newest, is called "Sugar Plum Poisoned" . The author is Jenn McKinlay. The books are about 2 crime solving cupcake bakers. It was a good easy read and I will look for more in the series. At the end of the story, there are recipes for the cupcakes mentioned in the book. LOL

I'm reading How to Disappear - Gillian McAllister. I have read at least one of her books as they are very gripping. I forgot I bought this one a while back.

Finished another older Harlan Coben book called "Back Spin". It was published in 1997 so pretty dated. It is part of the Myron Bolitar series which I really like. Myron is a former basketball star now sports agent-crime solver. He has some very interesting friends. This was another very twisty murder and kidnapping mystery. Coben's sense of humor makes his books really fun!

finally finished Fairy Tale, Stephen King - it was worth it in the end and reminds me very much of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrope and some of the other CS Lewis books - if you have time, it is good

I didn't like the ending of that book I just read! It was very unrealistic. I am going to read what other people thought on Amazon.

I am going to read the book that the film Die Hard is based on. I just looked and there are two books for the first two Die Hard films. I just bought them for my kindle, lol. My husband might read them as well.
