I have just finished "Leave the World Behind" by Rumaan Alam. After all the talk about the movie being disappointing, I decided to read the book and I don't know why anyone would think this would make a good movie. There is no action. There is a lot of character development and interaction between them which is probably what was appealing to movie producers. However, I think this would be pretty boring in a film. The book is written in a way that draws you in but I don't think this can be achieved visually. The WORDS matter! It was an intriguing plot but I am not sure I even liked it. No spoilers but I was not happy with the ending. I will probably watch the movie when it streams just to see how they attempted this story.

^ I think I said we started watching that film and stopped as we thought it was very slow-paced.

yesterday I read Sandra Brown's latest Out of Nowhere - it was good and today have started Cassandra in Reverse by Holly Smale which I believe @Lou recommended back in July and it just arrived... thank you

I finished it about 1:30 am and enjoyed it very much - although she stated it is not an exact telling of what it is like to be on the spectrum it definitely gives a good and interesting insight into what their life is maybe like and I appreciate that.

I just finished "Midnight is the Darkest Hour" by Ashley Winstead. This book is dark. It deals with several disturbing topics such as child abuse, vengeance, murder, drug dealing, the occult, and the lust for power and the evil men will do to get it. It is also a romance. It is told in first person by Ruth, the preacher's daughter. It jumps back and forth in time to tell the story of a very small town in Southern Louisiana that is controlled by the Reverend, a fire and brimstone fundamentalist. The writing is compelling, the story sad and horrible. I liked it a lot. I will look for more of this author's books.

^ I have that book on my kindle. I think it was on a list of the best thrillers of last year so I bought it.

sounds very interesting, I am not sure my soul could take it...

I am reading the Geek Girl series by Holly Smale and if I hadn't read Cassandra in Reverse I likely wouldn't be reading it, it's okay and so I will finish the series. It is really a teen read.

It is really dark and I was disturbed by it but the writing is really good. It delves into the hypocrisy of religion also.

I finished reading the Geek girl books and was not really thrilled by them, I should have stopped with Cassandra.

I think the Geek Girls are written for Tweener Girls. Cassandra was the author's first (and only?) adult novel.

"Adult novel" makes me think of erotica. I wonder if there is a better word for that. I realize it's just fiction. and maybe a clarifier is unnecessary. but it seems the above sentence requires one.

Also I enjoy YA fiction, too.

I wanted to read something lighter so I chose "Ruff Justice" by Laurien Berenson. It is part of a series about a woman and her family who have Standard Poodle show dogs and she gets involved in solving crimes. I have read at least one other one in the series. There is a lot of information about dog shows and all that is involved. The story was fairly interesting with the murder of an artist connected to the dog show circuit. Fast read. Not as compelling as what I usually choose but it is light reading. These types of books are ok for a change though I have liked other series better than this one. The dogs are nice though!
