Literature What are you currently reading?

Today I finished "The Night Shift" by Natalka Burian. I picked it up while I was just browsing through the library. It is a sci-fi about a young woman in NYC. Jean lost her office job with a world renowned clinical psychologist and is struggling to make ends meet. She is working two jobs, one at a bar and the other at a bakery and the shifts are back to back lasting overnight. She has to rush from the bar to the bakery and it is challenging. When a co-worker suggests a solution, she is ready to try it. It seems there are "doorways" all over the city that allow you to travel instantly to other locations. This seems the perfect way to get to her second job, but there are side effects. Then her co-worker disappears and the consequences of using the "shortcuts" is a possible reason. This is an interesting read and a different take on time travel. I liked it.

I am currently reading Stephen King's "Holly" - it is interesting as it takes place during the pandemic... King is not a Trump fan LOL

Holly is a detective who starred in three previous King books which I think I have read and don't remember her.

I only know this because I wanted to read all of them all. I loved her in The outsider mini series, but I think I am just going to skip the trilogy and do The outsider, If it bleeds and Holly.

Is this a different Holly than the one Emma mentioned?

Just finished another Harlan Coben called "Run Away" which was published in 2019. This one was really good! So many twists and turns all the way to the very last pages! Simon's daughter Paige is missing. He sees her in Central Park. She is a junkie and in terrible shape but when he tries to talk to her, they get into an argument. Her drug dealer bf shows up and there is an altercation which is videoed by the crowd that gathers. Simon is arrested and Paige and Aaron disappear. So starts a terrible journey for Simon. Plot number two involves a couple of hit men (one is a woman) and their twisted jobs. Then there is the PI searching for another missing person. This book has murder and drug addiction and family drama. I really liked it!

^ I just bought it on your recommendation. The last book I read of Harlan Coben was 2014, according to Amazon. I think I read every one before that. I'm not sure why I stopped as they are all generally good. The last book of his I read was Missing You.

I will add that one to my list! I love Harlan Coben's books. His sense of humor and great characters plus the twisty plots make them a lot of fun to read.

Murder at the Polo Club
A Cleopatra Fox Mystery
By C.J. Archer.

I've mentioned this before but I am a big fan of C.J. Archer. Hoopla carries a lot of her books in audio book format. When I'm having trouble sleeping I will listen to an audio book. She has a new series, the Cleopatra Fox Mysteries.
These books also fit into the Amateur Detective genre. cooincidence does get used a lot. For instance in Murder at the Polo Club, the murder occurs at a polo match that Cleo is attending.
All of the books contain a murder which she solves with the help of her friend Harry Armitage. there is a romance gestating there which probably puts this book into the Romance section. And all the books occur in 1900, so also a historical fiction.
I also like the voice actor that reads these books.

I just received this from Hold and started reading it - good so far - thank you!

Today I finished "The Children's Blizzard" by Melanie Benjamin who is the author of the California surfers book I read previously. She specializes in historical fiction and this one was really good, though tragic. It is about a blizzard in Nebraska in January of 1888. I could relate to much of this as I grew up on the plains of SW Minnesota which is not that different from Nebraska. Much of the mid-west was settled by immigrants from Norway, Germany, and other Northern European countries. They were lured to this harsh country by "fake news" and promises of a land of "milk and honey." Immigrants were given 160 acres for free if they lived on the property and farmed it for 5 years. Little did these brave people realize the harsh conditions on the prairie. The weather was not predicted very well back in the 1880's and no one knew this killer storm was coming. The story takes historical facts and creates fictional characters, some based on real people. It is a really compelling read and very sad. I liked it quite a lot and will look for the author's other books as she is a great writer.

strangely enough - coincidence? - today's Jeopardy calendar question is regarding this - it was H for History and it asked the name of the Act which is Homesteader

I am struggling a bit with The Night Shift - it isn't compelling enough to make me wish to read in every spare moment and yet interesting enough that I wish to see what happens.

I read a really "light" little romance called "Cat Cafe Christmas" by Codi Gary. Of course you know why I picked it up! :D It was a cute story that I kept seeing as a Hallmark Christmas movie as I was reading it. It is about a young woman who owns a cat rescue and cafe. Of course she meets a man who hates cats but he is a marketing guy and helps them save the rescue. Totally predictable but fun with lots of cats!

The Hike - Lucy Clarke. It is a thriller about 4 women hiking in Norway. I think I did start it, but have gone back and read from the beginning. It reminds me a bit of the film The Descent.

I have 11 unread books on my kindle so that will be the first.
