Literature What are you currently reading?

^ I got that for £1 in a charity shop the other day. The only thing that puts me off is its MASSIVE. Kinda tempts me into getting a kindle haha, that thing will take up most of my bag! Is it worth hauling around? If not I guess I could slowly get through it as a bedtime book haha.

Im reading Damned by Chuck Palahniuk. Its OK so far, not brilliant. I used to love his books when I was younger but the last one I read I couldnt finish (Pygmy) and this ones bler. I dunno if its just cause I'm older or he is just getting shittier. Will see.

I'm enjoying it so far but the insanely long footnotes have made me sleepy on more than one occasion. I'd save it for a night read instead.

Ahahhh if it even has that sleepy effect, even better!
seriously though if a book is that big why not do it as book 1 and book 2. im quite tempted to literally cut it in half haha

The Small Hand wasn't that scary but I agree that The Woman in Black is spooky,:) I've read the book, seen the play and I watched the film this year, the film is really frightening! I liked The Mist in the Mirror too although the ending seemed rushed. I also liked The Man in the Picture. I love ghost stories, one really scary ghost story is Dark Matter by Michelle Paver.
love ghost stories too!
it's weird, but when i read The Woman in Black a few years back, i guess it never occurred to me to see if she had written anything else.
i had no idea. look forward to reading those others you mentioned.
really thought the film version was scary too. (but was disappointed for not following the book's ending, poetic license be danged.)

will also check out Dark Matter by Michelle Paver. thanks! :)

Waging Heavy Peace by Neil Young. This book isn't what I thought it would be and is a bit of a mess. But I'm about 1/5 through it and finally getting used to it.

Has anyone read The Da Vinci Code? There was a copy laying around work and I read the first few pages. Kind of gory but it piqued my interest. I don't read a lot of non fiction. Anyone think it's worth it? Copies aren't hard to find in thrift shops.

It seems like a lot of people don't really like Dan Brown's writing but I enjoyed that book, it's entertaining.

Thanks Moll Flanders. His style of writing seemed OK to me, what little I read. I think next time I find a thrift copy in good shape I'll buy it.

Non-fiction? O_o

I liked the Da Vinci Code though. The writing style didn't bother me much, and I found it (and his other books) a fun read.

I finished Mo Hayder's The Treatment a few days ago. Unfortunately some idiot on a forum gave away the entire plot without a spoiler so I knew what to expect. I was hoping the twist would come early but it was long past halfway through, and all that time I knew what was coming.

I was really, really annoyed at one of the main characters
RAPING someone and his victim reassuring him (and the reader) that she had wanted it and so it's okay, it's not really rape, and he's a good character
. Luckily I didn't know ALL of the twists and I thought the one with his brother was great writing, I didn't see it coming at all.

I keep reading these books in the wrong order. I read Skin first, then found out it was the sequel to Ritual so I read that, then I realised Caffrey was a recurring character from The Treatment so I read that, then I realise The Treatment is a sequel to Birdman. Ugh!

me too!
but i only read his first The Eyre Affair. after buying the next Lost in a Good Book, i didn't want to read it until i'd read Great Expectations...
which i just did recently thanks to my book club, so i best be getting on with this series.

Picked up Life of Pi. I want to reread it before I see the movie.
me too!
this is one of favorite books ever but it's been a while, so i need to read it again before the movie comes out. can't wait for it.
(trivia: my user name has more to do with this book and the character Pi than anything else. :))

I thought so, but you never know - plenty of people think it's an accurate historical account :p

Yeah, there's nothing historical about it. And the secret society that Da Vinci was supposed to be a member of which a lot of people believe is true? Which Dan Brown based his book on? Made up. All made up. So it's not even a proper myth.

I'm not going to say what I think of the Da Vinci Code or of Dan Brown's writing. I might insult a lot of people on here. :p

I know. Made up is how I like my fiction :P

And your opinion is hardly an unpopular one, I wouldn't be offended. I only get offended when people assume I'm some sort of moron because I liked the books ;)

It's the only Dan Brown book that I've read, and I did really enjoy it because I like that sort of stuff: puzzles, mysteries, secret stuff. So it was a fun read, for me.

Yep, but some people are adamant that there really was a secret society. I've heard some people that claim Dan Brown is a member of it and so he knows the truth which is why he wrote the book.

It's the people who believe it to be true or to be based on historical events that are the morons. :p

I just get ****** of that he can't actually write, it's a crappy plot with massive holes all over the place, yet he gets to be a best-selling author whereas good authors who actually work really hard to make sure they've got well-written, good plot etc, don't get the time of day because crap like Dan Brown, Twilight, 50 Shades of Grey and other ****, take up the bestsellers lists and all the media coverage etc.
