Literature What are you currently reading?

I finished book two of "The Passage" trilogy, "The Twelve." This is a disturbing story but really sucks you in! There is lots of violence and it can be pretty awful. The writing is amazing though. The characters are compelling. I have reserved book three. After I finish that, I will need to read something light and happy. This series is very dark.

I have finished "The City of Mirrors" which is the conclusion of "The Passage" trilogy. I am still trying to process this truly profound story. A journey of 100 years in the first two books and the conclusion is 1000 years past the virus that is nearly an extinction event for mankind. Messing with Mother Nature is never a good idea. An amazing story of humanity's survival.

I read another Jennifer J. Chow book called "Mimi Lee Cracks the Code." It is from the series about the California groomer and her telepathic cat who solve murders. It was fun and easy to read and a needed break from the heavy dark stuff I had read before.

The Book Of Enoch. It's an ancient text that has long been regarded as apocryphal by both Jews and Christians but which was quoted in the canonical new testament by Jude.

I read that years ago and found it very interesting - maybe should revisit it.

👍 👍

I just finished the audio book which I got for free from Hoopla. It was supposed to be my bedtime story but I liked it so much I just listened to it wherever I went.
The book got some really good reviews and if you read it just wait till it's over to read about the author. It will give you an even greater appreciation of the book.
this is one of those books that is better if you don't know much about it going in. Some good surprises.
in the audio book the narrator did a fantastic job of acting out the roles of the different characters. The book's setting is. modern day London and all the characters are from London and speak with an English accent. The narrator is also English so it probably wasn't a stretch for her to sound English. :)
Even so the narrator did a great job with the voices. noticeable but natural differences with each character

If you are in a book club and need a suggestion. This is a great book club book. there are even some suggested discussion questions online.

I just finished "Any Where You Run" by Wanda M. Morris. It is about two sisters who live in Jackson, Mississippi in 1964. They are Black women trying to survive in a hostile environment and are both dealing with trying circumstances. I won't go into the plot which is tragic and dark. The story is told from the perspectives of the main characters. Violet is 21 and a free-spirit who gets herself into situations she can't control. Marigold is a few years older and she is the "good girl" who nevertheless finds herself in trouble. Then there are the men in the story. Dewey, the rich white boy who falls for Violet. And Mercer the hired gun. It's a good read, exciting, and sad. And times have not changed that much in all these years.

that means it's a real good book?
I didn't read much about it before I read it.
and I think that is the way to go. That way the surprises are surprises.

The author is a popular YA author - especially the tween girl crowd.
this was her first foray into "grown up" fiction and it sounds like she hit it out of the park.
There is also something about the author that makes the book better in retrospect.

Do you have Hoopla in Canada. I really enjoyed the audio book they have there for free.

It's 93 holds on 20 books at my library.
Our Hoopla is just music and films and comic. Audio books are through Libby. Just realized that. It is great for music, found lots hard to find elswhere

edit: sounds like a chik book.

Chick Lit.
Yeah, it sort of is.
But not typical. Don't want to spoil it but it has some very unusual elements. and it's just fun.

Here is the best review I could find that had no spoilers

Cassandra’s story develops in strange and unexpected ways. What feels at first like an unconventional romantic comedy develops into something quite different and extraordinary. It turns out that the relationship most in need of repair and a do-over is not what Cassandra expects at the outset. Smale effectively brings readers into Cassandra’s singular mind and along on her journey in what feels like a brave voyage of discovery. Readers will only regret that they can’t close their eyes and experience it for the first time all over again.

This is a book I'd like to experience for the first time again--
The House in the Cerulean Sea, by TJ Klune. Wonderfully fantastical, and heartwarming. I listened to it on audiobook, and am on hold for the book

I also liked Where the Crawdads sing. Kind of book I kept hoping for outcomes I didn't think would happen,, but they did!
