Literature What are you currently reading?

The book I read today was very interesting. It is "God is an Astronaut" by Alyson Foster. Though it was published in 2014, the subject of the plot is very contemporary. It is about Spaceco, a company that gives paying customers a ride on a shuttle. Tragically one explodes killing all passengers. Jessica, wife of one of Spaceco's founders must deal with all this entails. The format of the book is her e-mails to a former colleague (and lover). It is a compelling tale and I couldn't put it down.

on your recommendation I am about 1/2 way thru it and the weirder part is that the rocket's name is Titan....

Today I finished "Relic" by Alan Dean Foster. While his name is familiar, I didn't recognize any of the titles listed. He has written a lot of books. He wrote the novelizations of the movies Alien 1,2 3 and Alien Covenant, plus Transformers, and Star Wars. This book was amazing! Thousands of years in the future, mankind has colonized many worlds never encountering any alien life. Back on Earth, a biological weapon is unleashed called the Aura Malignance. It targets only humans and it does it so well that it is an extinction event, spreading to the other worlds and killing everyone. Except one man on a colonized world. For some reason, Ruslan is immune. He is rescued by an alien race called the Myssari. They are kind and care for him but he is a specimen to be studied. The Myssari want to resurrect the human race by cloning Ruslan but he is resistant. Then a discovery changes everything. An observation scan of the ruins of an old human settlement sees what looks like a human form. I won't tell any more but this was a fascinating story!

Read this little novella in a couple hours of wasted time! "Flowers for the Sea" by Zin E. Rocklyn is a strange fantasy tale that I did not like at all. I only finished it because it was so short. It is the story of some refugees on a ship in an ocean filled with monsters and flying razonfangs who snatch people at will. Told in first person by Iraxi, a pregnant woman, most of the book is taken up by her thoughts on her pregnancy and the graphic description of the birth of a strange baby that telepaths in many voices. It is just too weird and I felt no connection to the characters.

Went to the library today and got 4 books. I then spent the afternoon reading "The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea" by Kerrelyn Sparks. It was a standard fantasy of witches, shapeshifters and the battle of good vs evil. The main character is a young woman who can shape shift into a seal. She has 4 "sisters" who are all queens and feels she doesn't really belong. The story had a YA romance vibe to it until it got to the graphic sex. LOL It was a fairly entertaining read.

Today I read "Snowbound" by Blake Crouch. I have read several of his books and loved them all! This one is no exception. Though his recent books have been sci-fi, earlier in his career he wrote crime thrillers. This is an exciting story about human trafficking. When Will's wife disappears he is the prime suspect and being a lawyer, he knows how badly this can go with the police detective he encounters. So he makes a decision to run with his 11 year old daughter who suffers from cystic fibrosis. Five years later a knock on the door, turns their lives upside down. Will's wife is only one of several women who have disappeared and a former FBI agent's sister is among them. She is on a vendetta to find her and the other missing women. This leads them on a twisting trail of murder and crime cartels. Great storytelling, characters, and plot twists.

oh. I forgot to tell you guys that I finished Lessons in Chemistry.
It has been on The NY Times Bestseller list for months. I put it on hold and I had to wait months and months for it. It's as good as everyone says it is. I loved it.

Apple is making it into a TV show.

it’s the story of Elizabeth Zott, a woman chemist and single mother confronting sexism and other tribulations as she tries to pursue her vocation in the early 1960s. She stumbles into a gig hosting a chemistry-centric cooking show on daytime TV and becomes a celebrity in syndication.

Since we were talking about Paper Girls I was reminded how much I liked it and decided to rewatch it.
After re-watching it, again I was disappointed that it ended so abruptly.

I was reminded that it's based on a graphic novel, and Hoopla has graphic novels.
I had tried to read an e-graphic novel on my old 6" Kindle Fire but found it too frustrating - a lot of scrolling and zooming. But I just got a Kindle Fire 10, and I thought maybe it would be big enough. And it's almost big enough. I just have to wear my reading glasses. but no scrolling or zooming is necessary. Plus I really like what ever they are using for formatting.

It was hot yesterday, so I took it down to the pool and read a ton of it poolside. I started skimming it to see how close to the TV show it was - and if it was close - I was planning on skipping to the end of the 1st season. However, it's not close enough to the TV show. Oh broadly it almost identical. But the plot is more complicated and convoluted than in the TV show. And with more characters.

I like what they did in the TV show. Obviously they streamlined for time but I don't think the extra parts in the story were necessary. The TV show gets to the same places as the Novel – it just does it without the twisty parts. (at least that is my early impression. )

I think the writers of the novel did a better job with the characters acting "logically". Also the TV show characters are a little bit different in some ways.

The graphic novel has 30 chapters that are divided among 6 novels. My e-book version has all 30 chapters. I have no idea what chapter I'm in. My ebook version doesn't number them. but according to the page counter I'm about a third of the way thru the book. (maybe one sixth thru the tv show). So now I'm worried that I am not going to get the closure I was looking for.

I haven't read more that a few graphic novels in the last decade. I think the last one was the Watchmen. Which I read only part of.

I started reading and realized it seemed familiar - I read it almost exactly a year ago and don’t think I will read it again although I enjoyed it at the time.

My library didn't have the e-book version of snow bound so I put it on my To Read Later List. but what a terrible title for a book. My library has at least ten items titled Snowbound.

I passed half way point of the graphic novel, Paper Girls, and it has diverged pretty much completely from the TV show. So I doubt I will get any kind of useful closure to the TV show.

This happened with The Walking Dead. It was very annoying! They actually lost some fans because of the drastic changes to the source material. I was mad too but stuck with it! LOL

And I finished another book today called "Quofum" . another sci-fi from Alan Dean Foster. Had I realized it was part of a series, I probably wouldn't have picked it up. Turns out it was the last book and it ended with no kind of resolution at all which is infuriating! I found out by looking for a sequel and discovered there is none. At least now I don't have to read the 7 prior books! The story was really interesting though, about a scientific team sent to explore the mysterious planet, Quofum, where they encounter many alien species of varying degrees of evolution.

So … you will get a completely different, additional story - I personally would love that.

As I had recently watched all the new „Witcher“ series on Netflix, I have again picked up the books. Think I read them first around 2013, so was happy to see that since I had last read the books, some new books have come out or at least are now available in official translations (instead of versions translated by fans from Polish to English), greatly improving the reading experience.

I have read another Deborah Crombie book called "No Mark Upon Her." It is another in the series about the detective couple in London. This one concerns the murder of a woman who was a champion rower. I learned quite a lot about rowing! Actually my niece did that in college. It was another really good book. I will continue to look for more in the series.

Me again! I found Blake Crouch's debut novel called "Desert Places." I didn't realize I had already read the sequel, "Locked Doors." Crouch is one of my favorite authors. He is a great story teller and his characters are believable. This is a terrifying thriller about one of the most evil serial killers I have ever read about. It is an exciting read and I was immediately sucked into the story. Andrew is a well know author of crime novels. He receives a strange letter that sends him on a wild path into darkness as his twin brother sucks him into his world of terror. Scary stuff!

Finished another Crombie book called "Garden of Lamentations." It was the follow up of the one I had just read so it solved all those mysteries plus had others. Her books have quite complicated plots with more than one crime being investigated. Really good stuff! I have another of hers plus the first of the series to pick up at the library.
