What's in your Garden?

Tom is overdue for a visit to the forum!

I harvested my 3 garlic plants! The bulbs were kind of small, but that's to be expected, I think: all 3 plants started producing scapes and I let them grow... some gardeners believe that the garlic plant puts growing energy into the scape instead of into the bulb. Anyhow, I'll plant a clove or two of each bulb this fall so I'll have garlic plants again next year. AND... the scapes produced a jillion tiny little bulblets (bulbils) which can be planted to make even more garlic. I'll have an ARMY OF GARLIC!!!

So I found out that the "weed" I've been trying to get rid of for the past few years isn't a weed at all, but a plant called comfrey. Which apparently, lots of gardeners grow on purpose because of its medicinal properties. It's also supposed to be good to feed to chickens or to use as compost.

I'm also pretty sure that I just created tons of new plants by accident by digging up the roots and chucking them in the compost pile. They propagate by roots cuttings!! Ugh!

I don't like it. I have tons of it, and it's driving me crazy! But since it is so difficult to get rid of, I will try to make use of it.

Does anyone want some? Lol.

@Katrina I think I've heard comfrey is hard to get rid of... that it's one of those things that can come back from just a tiny piece of root. But I might be confusing it with something else. HOWEVER... one thing I am sure of is, we're not supposed to consume it internally. Tea was formerly made from it, and I think it used to be eaten as a potherb, but it's now known to mess up your liver if you consume too much of it. I think it might be safe to use externally, as a poultice or something, but I'm not certain.

One of our tomato plants is dead and gone. The larger tomatoes never amounted to much. I think we got maybe 3 from this plant which got too tall and didn't get staked up and broke. The other plant still has small green tomatoes coming but I don't know for how much longer. The peppers are continuing to produce. The caterpillars ate the parsley down to nothing but it is coming back and I hope to see the beautiful butterflies soon!

Yeah, it's fine to use externally but not internally. I'm planning to use it as a poultice. If that works, I'll turn it into a salve.

And it doesn't just grow back from a piece of root. It'll grow roots from the damned stems, too! I buried a whole bunch of leaves and stems, thinking it would make a great fertilizer. Uhhh, no.

I did put some leaves into a bucket and covered it up. It's supposed to decompose into a super nutritious black goo which you can then mix with water to use as compost "tea" for the garden.

So today I found this ugly thing, and now I'm worried about my tomato plants. I've never dealt with tomato hornworms before, so finding it was quite a shock. It's huge!

I remember these guys from when I was a kid. My mom and grandparents used to make fairly large vegetable gardens and these worms took over, one year. They’re pretty scary looking things.

Yeah, they are. I literally shrieked when I saw it. :hide:
