Why the Left Need Guns

Me too.

However, the one thing I've become sure of in the wake of this mess is that the vast majority of people are good, or at least decent, and they aren't willing to put up with this ****. This has been pushing people pretty far over the edge of what they can tolerate from a government, in pretty huge numbers. I think it will work out. Not before lots of people die, though - I have no doubt we're going to see a lot of innocent suffering in the coming years, more than usual - but before the planet is destroyed. There's so much at stake and people need to step up, and for once, they seem to be really stepping up.
 
A good example of where this might lead, IMO, is the instructive story "Cows with Guns"... :D


Basically - in my opinion - it comes down to the fact that the right and the government have many more guns than the left could possibly stockpile.

We had a similar claim some time ago, when some Republican (I think it was Mr. Trump) suggested that if the Jews had had guns in Germany, the holocaust would not have happened. Sure, a nice fantasy, but realistically any Jewish resistance fighters would have shortly been rounded up and executed by the German authorities and possibly have even given some kind of excuse for the government to come down on them.

Holy ****, I haven't seen that since middle school. I kind of forgot it existed. You get a like based on that alone.

Anyway, I'm pretty convinced that at this point, the left needs to start arming itself. There are too many instances of white supremacist militias taking shape around the country to go ignored. Just having guns I think deters them and knocks them off their high horse.

I still firmly believe that in a society where gun violence is such a huge threat to civilian life, the best course of action is to flat out ban guns. But I think we're facing a lot larger threats than that now.

So, Spang, you finally got me. :p

It was Ben Carson who made that asinine statement about Jews possibly winning WWII with guns, and he was shot down (excuse the pun) right away. Considering he made another asinine statement about the ancient Egyptians using the pyramids to store grains, it's obvious he's completely clueless when it comes to history. Any history. And he's going to be in charge of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. It's freaking SCARY.
 
I know this is way off topic, but many years ago I lived with an alcoholic boyfriend. He had a loaded rifle in our apartment. He could be violent and unpredictable when drunk. One day I had enough of being terrified he would shoot me, and I unloaded the rifle and hid his bullets in our false ceiling. I never told him, and he never used the rifle (for hunting etc) back then thankfully.

I hate guns and want nothing to do with one. I couldn't even imagine shooting someone with it, anyone. Taking another life. I would sooner die myself. :/

It's not off topic. I think the reason why the left tends to shun guns is because leftists/liberals/progressives tend to be well educated and have a distaste for the taking of lives, especially unnecessarily, preferring nonviolent means of solving problems. That's why pacifism is considered a tenet of leftist ideology and why such pacifists as Gandhi and MLK Jr. have been so widely embraced by liberals.
 
We're dealing with fascists. The leader of the so-called "Alt-Right", Richard Spencer, got punched in the face--twice--during the inauguration. As a result, he did not attend the Women's March the following day as he had originally planned. Recently, more violence was used to prevent Milo whatshisname from speaking at U.C. Berkeley. We must not allow fascists a platform to spew their violent rhetoric. We must make fascists afraid again.
 
In a similar vein: the idea that being violent will "give the government an excuse" to go after the left is well-intentioned but simply naive. Those in power need absolutely no excuse to go after us. They will make **** up and do it anyway.
 
Make no mistake: having a society where everyone is carrying guns all the time is something I will always look down on. Gun violence in this country is tragically high, and we need a lot more restrictions in place. However, as it stands, our sham of a government would only ever build those restrictions to benefit the right and punish the left (more specifically, minority groups which are targeted en masse for minor violations in the first place).

Gun control is something I think is necessary for a stable society. Right now we're not stable. We need to be allowing those who might be in imminent danger from fascists and fascist sympathizers to arm themselves.

Anyway, it's not even worth debating this with someone who would essentially stand by a burning house filled with babies and try to stop the firefighters from putting it out because that's not fair to the fire.

This is very upsetting to me. Not that I'm upset with or mad at you... I'm not. It's just that your life is worth immeasurably more than someone who would murder you. Maybe I'll think of a way to say this more articulately later...

And I don't think your post is off-topic at all; you're addressing the issue of whether the left (which usually, but not always, rejects violence) can accept the use of lethal force to stop lethal force, but you're addressing this from another perspective.

Interesting to see that slugging a white supremacist is "fascist", considering that you're such a strong proponent of being armed and ready to shoot people in an armed rebellion.

I mean, it may just be me, but I would assume that most people would pick being hit in the face over being shot dead.

Also, apparently the government sanctioning things is the only way for action against evil to be justified.

The US didn't sanctify a war with Germany until it was far too late to save more than six million people. If a rogue militia from the US saw the threat of the nazis way early and went and put them down before the Holocaust was allowed to happen, would they also be brave soldiers doing good? Or would they be thugs who wrongfully assaulted someone else for having 'stupid opinions'?

People love to say they would have been on the right side of history when the Holocaust, the Civil Rights movement, slavery, etc. were happening, if only they'd been around to see it. This kumbaya attitude toward literal nazis shows that most of them are lying through their teeth, even if they don't think they are.

Want to be on the right side of history this time around? Want to be one of the people who fought tooth and nail to try and save tons of innocent people who an oppressive government tried to silence, deport, imprison, and murder? Then do it. Here's your chance.
