News 2016 U.S. Presidential election - the highs and lows

This is actually a topic amongst word nerds. :p

"male equvalent" of a 'shrew'

Interesting discussion board!

I disagree with the one poster's contention that "grouch" is a male equivalent to "shrew"; it doesn't have nearly the same negative connotations. "Grouches" often are seen as lovable, whereas I doubt that we'll ever see a movie entitled "Shrewish Old Women" in which the shrews are depicted as being sexually attractive and live happily ever after.

I was watching Dateline London yesterday and someone mentioned the same statistic that I heard on the documentary I saw, which was that white working class men in the US haven't had a real pay rise in 40 years. o_OA stunning stat about pay seems impossible but actually is true - The Washington Post

I would have thought that they would be attracted to vote for Bernie Sanders rather than DT, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I think that this opinion piece does a great job of enunciating the disconnect surrounding the right's outrage over Trump's "punishment for women" for having an abortion statement: The scariest thing about Donald Trump’s abortion comments

I was reading the same, that is actually fairly unbelievable that things like that still happen. Punish Women for Abortion? Spare the Outrage: That IS the 'Mainstream' Anti-Choice Position - Rewire

I doubt that working women of colour have done much better....

ight, but this was in reference to why white working class men support DT.

Agree. Makes perfect sense that they would elect a billionaire who stands for reducing "hand-outs" and subsidies to improve that.

I was searching for the quote that I read maybe a week ago, saying that beating Trump is the short-term solution, but the long-term solution must be to remove the ignorance that has led to his rise.

However, when I was searching for it, googling "Donald Trump ignorance" gives way too many results to wade through, so I could not find it, unfortunately.

Trump would just turn that around and say that liberals were calling people ignorant. Hard working people being called ignorant because they have their own opinion etc.

Yes, that's what the journalists were saying, that white working class men are fed up with what they see as the elites. The media calling them ignorant is probably going to make them feel more alienated and angry. I am still hoping that DT is just trolling for attention and publicity and has no intention of ever being president!:D

Electoral Map Is a Reality Check to Donald Trump’s Bid - The New York Times
Mr. Trump has become unacceptable, perhaps irreversibly so, to broad swaths of Americans, including large majorities of women, nonwhites, Hispanics, voters under 30 and those with college degrees — the voters who powered President Obama’s two victories and represent the country’s demographic future.

Yes, Sanders was expected to win. He does well in caucuses, and Hillary does well in elections.
