How to answer 'those' questions

The honey one is a hard one. One of my co-workers said she asked a beekeeper about honey as we were having "that discussion" and was told the bees do not eat the honey and make it for us. ummm really?

It has p*ssed off a few people who were expecting an easy to reject "I have to survive on entirely on lettuce and lentils ..." type reply, yes.

Seems to deliver a fair amount of perfectly concrete information to those askers who's curiousity is/was genuine though.

Commincation ( and empathy) is all about trying to put oneself in the shoes of the other person.

That's why I started the thread to AVOID answers like yours CG.

Please feel free to raid the information (the 12,000 edible plant species is usualy a bit of an eye opener to people who only know ten to a dozen at best, btw) and change the style of delivery to one that suits, Alice.

I started a topic, with credit to you for inspiring it, HERE, btw ..

It may cast some light as to why answers in the style that most vegans seem to favour should be avoided like the plague.

I will. If someone were to ask 'what do you eat then' personally I wouldnt reply 'ummm any of the 12,000 plants' because to me it smacks of 'holier than thou' and I feel it would A-Put a non-veg*ns back up and B-Show veg*ns as preachy.

You should check out the topic I started too Shyvas.

I started the new topic to try and stop this one getting derailed, btw.

I did and the first thought that came to mind was it is all about communcation. Everyone is 'selling' something and the best way is to be able to listen, have empathy and always try to put yourself in the shoes of the other person. Never to be sarcastic or condescending.

If I was a rude arrogant person, I would have replied ' Please state at least 5000 of those 12000 plants' which in turn would lead us to go round in circles.
I don't think that I would have ever got a concrete answer such as ; tofu, seitan , beans etc. Not as fancy but at least more down to earth.

I suppose that one could just say that a lot of foods can be made vegetarian, and give a few examples, like shepherd's pie, or lasagne.

I always answer... food, just not meat, dairy or eggs. If it's a family member I just leave it at food, the duh is implied.

I think the context of the answer on that one really comes down to what the context of the question is...If someone is genuinely curious then a straight answer is best. Once it came out I was veg*n in a hairdressers and they were curious to know what was veg*n and what wasnt.

Context does matter and I won't be a smart *** if they're genuinely interested, family members though...

Re honey. I recently said this to someone and they accepted it (paraphrased): "In a bee's entire life they only make 1/12 teaspoon of honey, for food for their babies. Id feel really mean taking it away from them, I love bees." Probably looked like a crazy bee-loving hippie but it's true and also worked haha.

With Clueless Git's response, you could rephrase it to "There are sooo many plants to eat, my favourites are ......." and that way you get the point across without being a smartie bum.

Well... really it's the oppressed worker class bees making honey for the ruling class bee's babies. :p

...and the worker bees are all female.

But really, the clincher for me is the way honey is made is that the bees eat it then regurgitate it to add the enzymes that transform the sugars. In essence, honey is bee vomit.

If someone doesn't get the idea of fake meat, could this mean that they eat meat because it is made from animals? I suppose that one could ask them that.

Yes, I think it is something like this and what Alice said about meat being "healthy". I think most meat eaters believe in the whole "we are meant to eat meat...it's natural", therefore, anything made of soy/vegetable/gluten protein to resemble meat is "fake" and, therefore, can't be good for you. Something like that, anyway.

I hear this all the time as well as 'if we don't kill animals, they'll only kill each other'.....:(

In the UK, I don't think we've actually let any predators live that could take on a cow/sheep.

The Pol-Pot/<insert genocidist/mass-murderer of choice here> defence: "Deh woz only gunna kill each uvver enyways .."

It should be made law that people have to pass a 'what is wrong with this statement' test before being allowed to vote, imho.

Only 1 out of the 1 million and one stupid statements made by the mass. :(
