TV & Film The Walking Dead

I've been reading the reviews before watching this season and I'm not sure if I'm even going to bother watching it this week. Forbes said it was the season low, it's only episode 4! Wtf are they doing with one of my favourite shows?:sf:

People are already complaining about this episode... I don't know why.

Aside from following the book, they're doing such a good job making Negan into exactly what he should be. I've seen so many articles complaining about how Negan isn't threatening enough, how he's just a bully... what part of this are they missing? Is a trigger-happy bully with charisma flowing out his *** and a barbed wire baseball bat somehow not threatening to these people?

I dunno. After a shaky premiere (imo) the show has turned itself around really quick. Two, three, and four have all been stellar episodes. I don't get the complaining and I can't wait for next week.

This! This is one of the articles I saw complaining! Don't trust them, they don't know what the **** they're talking about. Negan is one of the best parts of the comic and he's gearing up to be one of the best parts of the show. At the very least, you should watch it yourself and come to your own conclusion.

I just re-read issue #103 and it is absolutely amazing how about 90% of episode 4 is verbatim #103... Critics can say what ever they want, but the dedication they are displaying by being faithful to the story as it was published in black and white 4, going on 5 years ago is absolutely fantastic... Really pumped to see more panels being brought to life on the screen... I don't know, maybe some people who haven't read the comic will stop watching, but the fact that they've decided to be so faithful to Robert Kirkman's tale as it was originally illustrated is pretty much as good as it gets for Chryssie and I at least :)

Hmmm, one question that I simply can not get out of my head... Does Spencer have any guts? ;)

Usually I try not to stay with the "stick 100% to the source material" rhetoric. Adapting something for another medium is difficult and requires change much of the time. What matters most is that they tell a good story.

The distinction for me comes from the fact that this part of the comic is just a really, really good story. They can almost guarantee a great story by just sticking to it.

Well no, they definitely don't have to be purists about it by any means at all and enough elements here are different to kind of go off it some alternate directions... They have and will continue to do so, I mean you have Morgan who was already dead by now and a much different character at that, and you have Carol, Sasha, and Michonne (in addition to fulfilling her own character) as composite characters filling that Andrea void, and Daryl creating entirely new elements to the story. But it's clear that where Negan is involved they have decided that the purist approach is the best approach. I fully support that, Negan's panels in the comics are just too damn good to mess with lol... I hear that all of JDM's scenes are still being filmed twice, with and without the fuckity **** **** bits :) Nice incentive to buy BluRay editions of seasons pretty more here on out.

I think they're doing a good job of putting all the building blocks in place for a satisfying, epic battle spawning multiple story-lines to come. (I have not read to this point in the comic, so that isn't a spoiler, it's just intuition.) The group is now completely disarmed, physically and psychologically beaten and humiliated. This is a necessary element in great storytelling - IE: Put your characters in horrible situations! I also like that they are slowly introducing other members of the gang besides Dwight. It's definitely uncomfortable to watch at this point - but I'm pretty sure that is the idea.

They're following the comic book wonderfully.... I'm very very happy with it!

This is the problem though, I have no interest in reading the comics so it has to keep the attention of people who don't know what is happening next and it really isn't holding my attention.o_O

You mean one version has swearing? I would prefer to watch that version.:D

I think I will wait until next week and read the reviews of episode 5 and if they are better then I will watch 4 and 5 back to back.

I can't say that I understand your reasoning for relying on magazines for reviews... The majority of reviews that critics have been writing have been negative pretty much since season 3. Like FortyTwo said, watch what is one of your favorite TV shows and judge the episodes for yourself. Who cares what Forbes, Time, Rolling Stone, or whoever is being paid to write a review thinks? Personally whether it's TV, movies, music, video games or what ever it may be I avoid critic reviews. I don't want to have what other people think in my head before experiencing art regardless of what avenues it may manifest. Some of the greatest pieces of cinema and music have be trashed by professional critics... A Clockwork Orange, Planet of the Apes, The Velvet Underground & Nico, Pet Sounds, Abbey Road, etc.

Yep, F bombs and Negan go together sort of like carrots and peas... Fans want to see him deliver his lines without the censorship nonsense.

Definitely, they have been beaten, humiliated and demoralized to the point where it's painful and hard for the reader/watcher... It's a brilliant build up for sure, and that was what was so great about the published story, and nice to see that being gotten across on the screen successfully too.

I don't. I usually don't look at any reviews or spoilers at all, but because the first episode was so violent I looked at the reviews for the storyline so I could check if there was anything really violent so I could prepare myself. I think episode 2 and 3 were awful and I haven't read what anybody else thought.

I found Negan scary when he had them all kneeling about to be killed, but now I find him faintly ridiculous. It seems like the actor is playing him crazed and almost in a camp way and he doesn't seem scary at all.:D

Meh. It's only a show after all, I'm sure I can find something else to watch.:p

It's definitely up to you what you watch. This season does mark a pretty huge shift in tone and content if the comic is anything to go by (and it does seem to be). That fact will attract some and repulse others, and that's okay. I know I'm excited but you don't have to be!

That sums it up pretty well, I think... Well stated

Also, it's probably worth noting that Negan is nothing if not faintly ridiculous. He is definitely a comic book character. Whether that translates successfully to the screen or not is going to depend entirely on how you feel about the character you see.

I really can't understate how much of a shift in tone there's been from the beginning to now, both in the comics and the TV show. The TV show is certainly a more drastic shift. They vowed to take a lot more realistic, gritty approach in S1 (like the whole thing with the CDC) and that continued through right about until the Governor's introduction. He was the first thing from the comics where I was sort of like, how is this going to translate? But they managed to tone him down enough where I think a lot of people used to the tone of the TV show were satisfied.

But this is a comic book that the TV show is sourcing from, and that's only becoming more and more apparent as the story goes to places that the S1 show wouldn't have dreamed of.

Negan, Jesus, and Ezekiel are definitely comic book characters, and there's no way of them not coming off as such. I can understand the term "campy" being tossed around by people not up on that. It's completely understandable.

It was around the Governor's introduction that the original show runner was fired and Scott Gimple was hired. Which should explain a lot :)

One great / hopeful moment that hasn't been mentioned: Father Gabriel and Negan meeting. When Father Gabriel asked Negan if he wanted to 'pay respects' to Maggie. I'm pretty sure nobody watching believed she was actually dead, which Rick later confirmed with his 'good thinking' comment. So the group was able to achieve that one victory.

I also loved how absolutely creepy as **** (Negan's words I believe, but totally accurate) he was during this. Really reminds me of the comic Gabriel.
