Literature What are you currently reading?

Wow. Pleasantly surprised by a book I just listened to, again outside of my normal genre. One Small Mistake by Dandy Smith. It was so good I'm starting another book by her, The Wrong Daughter.
A few of her books are on Kindle Unlimited so I got that one and two others. I think I have heard of that author before.

I should mention the books are 12 hours long. I did skip some chapters in the middle and it made no difference. I knew what was going on. I don't need to get to know every mundane detail about characters in order to follow a story. They can easily be cut down to 8 hours.
The book I'm reading now is like that. The main characters are driving from Texas to Tennessee. And I swear I could drive it myself faster than they are going.

Today I finished "The Last Thing He Told Me" by Laura Dave. Told in first person by Hannah who is recently married to Owen, and caring for his 16 year old daughter, Bailey, who is not that happy about the situation. Her mother was tragically killed when she was a toddler and it has always been just her and her dad. Then he disappears leaving a bag full of money in her locker at school, and sending a cryptic note to Hannah "protect her." The software company he works for gets raided by the feds and his boss arrested for fraud. Hannah has to deal with all this as her whole world falls apart. She is determined to find out what is going on and believes Owen could not be involved in the company crimes. Nothing is what it seems as she finds out her husband has lied to her about his past. This is a really good book and it says in the jacket that the movie and TV rights are sold. We will see if there is a movie. It would be good!

I read "Middle of the Night" by Riley Sager. This is a new book that must have come up on one of my lists. I have never read his books but I will now. This was a really good thriller, part murder mystery, ghost story, and family trauma. It is another book that jumps back and forth in time with Ethan telling the present day story, and the perspective switching for the past story. 30 years ago 10 year old Billy, Ethan's best friend, disappeared from the tent they were sleeping in camping in Ethan's back yard. Ethan is now back to his family home after his parents retire to Florida. The neighborhood hasn't changed much; some of his childhood friends are still there. Then Billy's body is found on a property near there and things get strange quickly. There's twists and some spooky stuff and I was totally sucked into this story. I did figure out part of the mystery before the end, but then there was another twist!

Yeeesh! A book I read late last month ("Ordinary Monsters", by J.M. Miro) had a bit of jumping around to different times, too. It made it much more challenging to follow the story line- and it's a long book to begin with!... but it was sort of necessary to explain at least one of the main characters. My initial opinion of this character changed quite a bit... like when I learned more about Anakin Skywalker.

I hate the jumping back and forth to different time periods. I also hate the whole "unraveling clues" thing which is why I don't generally listen to mysteries. The only time I stick with books like that is if there is a current relationship developing. It doesn't have to be romantic. It can be between family members and friends. But I do almost always want some kind of romantic bond to be in there.

I love Tessa Bailey as a writer - she is not for everyone as some scenes are sexy - I am currently reading Fangirl Down and about half way through - her characters are interesting and demand for her books is so high that I usually have to wait months on a waiting list.

Several authors have teamed up with their publishers to create Historical Mysteries Day (Sept 29th) which is Elizabeth Peters' birthday. There are over a dozen free historical mysteries to download. But just on September 29th.

I highly recommend Murder At The Mayfair Hotel. I'm a big fan of C. J. Archer.

Can anyone recommend a book that is listed as a free download. I thought it both surprising and disapoinging that none of Elizabeth Peter's books were free.

Read another new book that was on one of my lists. "All the Colors of the Dark" by Chris Whitaker. This book was dark with some very disturbing subject matter including abuse, obsession, and a serial killer. It is also about friendship and love and families. The story begins in 1975 when 2 young teen misfits become friends. It ends in 2001. A lot happens in those years most of it tragic. A girl is saved from abduction by the boy who is taken instead. So begins the search for a killer who snatches young girls and kills them. There is a lot going on and it pulls you in. Really good read!

I just finished "The Book Haters Book Club" by Gretchen Anthony. I found this one just browsing. It is not a murder mystery but a character driven story about families and love. The Over the Rainbow Bookshop has been in business for many years in Minneapolis and is a vital part of the community. When one of the co-owners passes away, Irma, the other owner, summons her adult daughter home from California where she has been for 20 years. The other daughter has always been there. They find out Irma has made the decision to sell the store and the girls fight her to save it from the developer. There is a ton of family drama. The book also has some little "quirks" that make it that much better. Such as book recommendations in the newsletter the store had published for years and a little ghostly commentary. It was a really good book, with humor and sadness (dealing with grief) and a little romance too.
