Literature What are you currently reading?

I just finished Nation by Terry Pratchett. It's a fantasy-ish story built on top of alternative history. Wikipedia says it's from the 1860s, although that's never stated explicitly in the story, as far as I can recall. It's set on an exotic island resembling the islands of the South Pacific. The two main characters are a young woman, Daphne, or Ermitude which is her real name, who is shipwrecked on the island, and a young man, Mui, who is a native.

This was my first Terry Pratchett novel. It started out quite good, but then it got a bit silly towards the end - too exaggerated for my taste. Still not a bad book - I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10.

I'm not sure if my next book will be fiction or non-fiction. Some time ago I had started a non-fiction one, but I only have it in electronic formats.

I used to read Terry Pratchett all the time. but I never read or heard of Nation. Most of the books I read take place on DiscWorld. and I guess you could characterize them as silly but I prefer calling them humorous and fun. you should read one of those next.

Just finished "Murder One" by Robert Dugoni. Another really good murder mystery and courtroom drama. I will definitely look for more books by this author. There is quite a bit of detailed CSI stuff in this one that is really interesting. One of those books where you don't want to put it down!

Me again! Catching up on my reading after taking a few days off from it. Read "Raised by Wolves" by James Patterson and Emily Raymond today. This was a fast read and something different from Patterson's usual thing. No murder just an intriguing mystery surrounding two teenagers who come out of the Idaho wilderness claiming to have been raised by wolves. I couldn't put it down. It touches on environmental and animal issues.

argh I can't get that one through my online libraries - ah ha I just went and looked at my physical library availability and they have tons of his books so I have requested Murder One and two others that are not online - I also see that there is a book that he participated in with a ton of other authors called Hotel Angeline so I have also downloaded that

Read another Tom Cox cat book today called "Close Encounters of the Furred Kind." I highly recommend these books to my cat loving friends! Tom writes like a stand up comic and he dearly loves his cats! There are also pictures!

I am reading the second in the Sloane series by Robert Dugoni "Wrongful Death" (Murder One is the 4th in the series) - he really knows how to keep you on the edge of the couch.

I finished "Vystopia: The Anguish of Being Vegan in a Non-vegan World" (it's pretty brief).

It's probably a book that friends and family of vegans should read more than vegans themselves, but it was nice to see in print that most others have experienced the same "stages" that ethically-motivated vegans experience when they make their lifestyle change. It's probably a VERY good book to read for a vegan experiencing exceptional depression or isolation, as the author treats such individuals as (apparently) a major part of her living.

In one of the books I was reading the main character's favourite book was The Little Prince (1943) by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and so I downloaded it and am reading it. I thought I had read it before, apparently not (it was A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett 1905). My mother owned a lot of books and so I was reading almost before I could talk and so many of the books were from the early 1900's. Frances Hodgson Burnett also wrote the Secret Garden and Little Lord Fauntleroy.

I loved The Little Prince! What book was the reference?
Just finished "Somewhere Beyond the Sea", the sequel to "The House in the Cerulean Sea" by TJ Klune. What an amazing beautiful book! A social commentary told through fantasy, poetically and humorously written. This is a story about love and family and hope. I loved it!
I also liked Beyond the Whispering Door

I am sorry I don't remember the reference - that was a few books ago :)

Now reading another Ashley Elston "The Rules for Disappearing" - just started it and it has grabbed my interest. I am also reading a real book, another by Robert Dugoni.

Just finished "The Night We Lost Him" by Laura Dave that I waited a long time to get. It is really really good! Much like her other book I read, very character driven with lots of mystery, secrets, family drama and a devastating love story. Great read and I will look for her other books.

This one finally arrived for me and I read it yesterday and into the early morning - it was very good and I have a couple more on Hold - thank you again for the recommendation.

Read another Robert Dugoni book called "Her Deadly Game." This is part of the series about the family of lawyers and the Violent Crime detectives. Another outstanding crime/courtroom drama with great characters and a compelling story. Hard to put down to go to bed last night! LOL I really like the detailed CSI descriptions. This one also was a lot about chess which I do not play but it was cool how it was worked into the story.

I finished "State of Terror" by Hillary Rodham Clinton and Louise Penny. It is a political thriller about nuclear terrorism and really tense and scary!

This one finally arrived and OMG, number 1 I couldn't stop reading (3am) and number 2 it eerily mimics what it happening today in US politics... there was a number of times I felt nauseous as it is so predictive... I am only 1/3 of the way through so far.

Thank you again for the recommendation so long ago, it feels like a lifetime ago, where, despite COVID it feels like the world was a safer place.
