Literature What are you currently reading?

Divergent by Veronica Roth - Has anyone else read this? It was honestly one of the worst books I've ever read. I dont know why I finished it.

I saw the trailer before The Hunger Games and thought 'hey that looks interesting' and, as ive probably mentioned before, I am an absolute sucker for anything dystopian. It's like someone tried to smoosh The Hunger Games and Harry Potter together. Maybe it's just because I'm about 15 years older than the target audience? Idk. I just think the whole idea is really unbelievable. With THG you could imagine that the world was really arranged like that, this, not so much. and all the factions have stupid names which bugs me. Also when she started being all love interest-y I almost threw my book into the train tracks. and dont get me started on the end. NOTHING MADE SENSE. Why is this drivel so popular? uughh.

^ I remember reading the sample of that on my kindle (you know how you can get the samples before you buy them) & disliked it. Obviously didn't buy it so don't know what the rest of the book is like. But on first impressions it came across as very much a kids book I thought.

Have you tried The Maze Runner? I actually really enjoyed that!

At the moment I'm rereading Choke by Chuck Palahniuk because it's good & I wanted something easy to read on the bus. :D

I started reading The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield last night, it's a gothic spooky story and I love reading books like that at this time of year.

You made the right choice :D. It got rather violent - people being stabbed in eye, sexual assault, suicide, shooting people in face - that kind of violent (but sex is baaad and scary so thats ok!!). So I'd imagine it was aimed at older kids. When you compare it to other YA books it flops. For example I wasnt particularly a fan of Harry Potter but you can't deny its a well written well thought out book. And even in that the Sorting Hat umms and arrs about who belongs in each house, whereas with Divergent everyone seems to fall perfectly into one personality category with no explanation - and if you don't youre abnormal. It'd be the equivilent of everyone in Slytherin being 100% evil all the time and not being allowed to do anything non-evil and tehy spend their free time torturing rats becuase that's whate evil people do. Divergent verges on presuming kids are thick. And there are certain themes I really wasnt happy with - for example if you dont have a personality that fits into one category, you are Factionless and cast into the street and made to do 'awful' jobs such as being a bus driver, garbage man, etc. Heaven forbid anyone is cursed so such an awful life!!! Sorry if that makes no sense. I havent read the Maze Runner but it's been on my to-read list for ages. If I can bring myself to read another YA book I'll get it. I might read it next actually.

Currently reading Parasite by Mira Grant, to keep things on topic.

I just finished The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters, bah, the red herrings almost fooled me.

I also read The Ghost Hunters by Neil Spring and Nearest Thing to Crazy by Elizabeth Forbes.

Regarding Amelia... Well, I haven't actually started it yet, but it is the next selection for my book club. :)

I'm about half way into Breakfast of Champions by Vonnegut. It's breaking my heart. :( Why, Kurt? Why are you breaking my heart? Slaughterhouse Five didn't break my heart this way. War is awful and dramatic and brutal, but the ceaseless and widespread, personal pain he's painting the picture of in BOC is just unbearable. I feel like I need a break every ten pages or so, to cry or... something.

Just read The Universe Versus Alex Woods by Gavin Extence & A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Really enjoyed them both although they are both very emotional...especially atss; you're hit with one thing after another after another :'(

Currently reading a book called Picture Me Gone by Meg Rasaff.

I'm sick of reading crap books. Ive read several in a row that I havent really enjoyed. Which is weird as I'm usually easy to please wth books.

Just finished one called Intrusion by Ken MacLeod. It was terrible. That's what I get for browsing Waterstones when I'm bored and its buy one get one half price.

I'm now reading the third book in the Wool trilogy, Dust, because I found the last two OK (and wanted to know what happened).
