Literature What are you currently reading?

I have recently read these:
Boys Run The Riot (manga series by Keito Gaku)
Miseducation of Cameron Post (Emily M. Danforth)
First Year Out (Symington, Sabrina)

It's like free therapy for someone who happens to be queer and has a **** ton of internalised transphobia and homophobia.
Highly recommend, if you or someone you know is a sad gay.

Finished a book called "No Plan B" by Lee Child and Andrew Child (who is the younger brother). This is the newest in the Jack Reacher series and the first one I have ever read. At least I don't remember any others. It's a decent crime thriller and Jack Reacher is a kind of "anti-hero hero" as he pretty much does whatever needed and doesn't care about consequences. I will probably find others in the series because I did enjoy this one.

Thank you again for the heads up on this book - just reading it now as it finally came in from the library - good as always although he seems a bit more blood thirsty in this one.

I finished the Golden Enclaves, book 3 of the Scholomance series by Naomi Novik.

Really liked it. No surprise because I love everything she writes.

Interesting thing is that as soon as it started I pretty much new how it would end. However how it got there was full of twists and turns. What they say: it's not the destination; it's the journey. I guess its true with books too.

Oh, btw, the best way to describe the Scholomance series is maybe Harry Potter meets the Hunger Games.

If that's the case, I need to read that.
oh yeah, I bet you would like it.

I remember from some of our prior conversations that you are or were a gamer.

The author is sort of a gamer, too

She received a bachelor's degree in English literature at Brown University and holds a master's degree in computer science from Columbia University.[3] She participated in the design and development of the computer game Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide, until she discovered that she preferred writing over game design.[2]

She is also a Long Islander Jew - just like me.

I first learned about her almost 20 years ago when I started reading her Temeraire series. She must have just turned 30 then.

The way I describe the Temeraire books is its like Master and Commander meets the Dragons of Pern

I finished "Spinning Silver" and I liked it a lot. I liked it much better than "Uprooted" and am looking forward to reading the dragons series.
I think the appeal of Spinning Silver is that it is, to us Americans, a recognizable fairy tale. so it has a lot of nostalgic appeal. Uprooted is more novel to us.

I have just started "His Majesty's Dragon" and I already love it! I think I will buy the Kindle version of the whole series because I can't trust that the library has all the books.

I finished "Her Majesty's Dragon", so went looking on Amazon for Kindle versions of the following books. To my surprise, I found that I had purchased the first 3 in a bundle a couple of years ago and had forgotten all about them. I don't often buy books so it must have been some kind of special promotion at a cheap price. Even the Kindle prices on these books is high IMHO so I will have to buy one at a time to complete the series.

My library has copies of all the books.
You might also try the used book store.

I just got from the library the ebook for the latest CB Strike novel. The Ink Black Heart
I had a long train ride today and it made the trip ... well not enjoyable ... but more than tolerable.

I started a book called The Mother by T.M. Logan. I have liked a few of his books and I forgot I must have pre-ordered this new one. I am enjoying it so I will probably binge read the rest of it this afternoon.:)

Yesterday I had a Doctor's appt and I ended up waiting a long time, but I brought my kindle with me and read some more of the Ink Black Heart. And then I couldn't put it down and finished it late last night.

I hadn't realized how long the book was right away. I just checked and IRL its 1000 pages long. Of all the previous CB Strike books - it's the longest and also the most complex. It also has a dizzying number of characters and suspects. Sometimes I had to use the Kindle search feature to remind me of who a character is.

As far as a mystery goes - it checks all the boxes for a good Noire Detective Murder Mystery. The possible romance takes only a few faltering baby steps forward, but I didn't find it as frustrating as I had in previous books.

I was going to encourage everyone to read this book, but Just now I checked some of the book's reviews and it got some mixed reviews. If you had read all the previous books you probably already know you want to read this one. If not, you might want to go check out the first novel, The Cuckoo's Calling

I just checked and there is going to be a book 7!
