Literature What are you currently reading?

To tide me over until book 5 of Temeraire series came in, I read "A Matter of Hive and Death" by Nancy Coco. It is part of a light hearted crime series called The Oregon Honeycomb Mysteries. It was a quick and fun read and I will find more. It has a young woman main character who owns an artisan shop and gets involved in solving crime in her small town. There are also cats! I enjoyed it.

I was reading a few books (from my local library) in Kristen Britain's fantasy series: "Green Rider". Much of the action takes place in the fictional land of Sacoridia, ruled by King Zachary. The Green Riders are a messenger corps in the service of the king, each of whom (unknown to most) has a magical ability, and the stories center mostly around them.

There is a TV show over here called Sort Your Life Out where a family have a team of people come into their houses and declutter and tidy and redo their home in 7 days. I bought a book written by one of the team. Change Your Space: Reclaim Your Home, Your Time and Your Mind - Dilly Carter. I'm starting that today.

I couldn't read that decluttering book as the format on the kindle was wrong and I returned it to Amazon for a refund! I read on the reviews other people said the same. I ordered the hardcover version instead. We are trying to stay in more to save money so I bought two more books, the Paris Hilton and the Mel B autobiographies. The three books are all arriving today.

I am going to read a book on my kindle. The Magpie Society. It is a YA book, but I have read one of her books the other day and really liked it so I hope this one is good.

I am going to a local charity shop next week as I found a few books for only 10 pence each so I hope to find more to read. I still haven't been to the libraries near here. I went there to join up and get my library card, but I haven't got any books out yet. I might do that soon.:)

Finished "Victory of Eagles" which is book 5 and have reserved book 6. I have checked out another first book of a series to start by James Patterson called "The Angel Experiment". It is a YA fantasy series. I got it because there was an article in the Daytona paper that the series has been banned in a school system in Florida. Mr. Patterson lives in Palm Beach, FL. The series was published in 2005 and has never faced controversy before.

.... "The Angel Experiment".
Huh? I read a lot of YA and I thought I had read that book but once I googled it - I don't think I have.
Let me know what you think of it.
I do remember that it was very popular with the YA crowd, and that at one time they were going to adapt it to film.

Most of the time banning a book only makes it more popular. Especially among adolescents. I don't know why they bother.

My favorite banned book is the His Dark Materials series. It was made into a film, that did not do that well at the box office, although I loved it. Some postulated that a boycott of showings by Catholics hurt the movie. they never produced a sequel. However in what I thought was justice it was eventually made into a TV series which is now on its second or third season. I keep meaning to find the time to watch it.

Originally His Dark Materials was a trilogy. Now there are 8 books. (I have read most of them - the original trilogy is The Best). Oh, and according to who ever keeps tracks of things - The Golden Compass (book #1) comes in second for the most banned book. I think Catcher in the Rye is #1.

@Chryssie, I bet you would like His Dark Materials, it's a complicated, deep, rich alternate universe. Talking spirit animals, armored polar bears, witches, angles, and magic.

Although librarians consider it YA, The author, Pullman, never intended it to be a YA book. But the protagonists are about 12 years old.

One of my favorite authors is David Weber. and my favorite series by him is the Honor Harrington series. I've brought up Honor a few times in this thread because there are like 30 books in the Honorverse.

Honor is a space ship captain thousands of years in the future. She grew up on a planet named Sphinx. Sphinx is co - habited by one of the galaxy's sentient species. A six-legged, telepathic arboreal cat.

When Honor was a little girl her home was pretty much a sanctuary for tree cats and of course eventually she was adopted. One of Honor's ancestors, Stephanie is credited with the discovery of tree cats and the first human to be adopted by one.

The four books, so far in the Star Kingdom series are all about Stephanie and her cat Lionheart. They are also classified as YA.

The last book, which I just finished is titled A New Clan. by the time of this book tree cats have adopted four young adults and they are involved in investigating and thwarting some criminals.

The trailer of the 2007 movie. Oh my, I forgot what a block buster this was. no sequels were made so I guess it lost money. darn conservatives.

But we have been rewarded with a TV show

I'm not a Star Wars guy.
So I don't look for Zahn very often. In fact, if you go the Zs in the library the whole shelf is pretty much Star Wars.
But I've read quite a bit of Zahn's books.

I've read a few of the "Cobra" and "Black collar" series. I liked the first couple then not only my interest fell off but my library does have them all.

He also co-wrote a series of novels with David Webber - set in the Honorverse. I have read them all.

Another series he wrote that I liked was the Frank Compton or Quadrail series. It's set in the future and they are all mysteries. Science fiction mysteries are a rare breed, maybe because they are hard to pull off. These are pretty good. The first book in the series, Night Train to Rigel is a homage to Hitchcock and in places mirrors North by Northwest. It's also a bit James Bondish.

Zahn is a great author. He pretty much is the Star Wars books guy
So I have heard. But this is my first book from him.

That' crazy. I checked and it's pretty much the same thing in my library. How come I haven't noticed this before? I have read all the Star Wars comic books that are in the library.
Thanks! This will be useful.

He is not the only author in the Star Wars universe of books. but maybe the best. His Thrawn series is very well regarded. I believe he also consults on the games.

I'm not sure but I believe he has some graphic novels in the Star Wars universe too.
