I'm not eating anything at the moment- but over the weekend, I had my first Kiwano melon. It weighed about a pound, with an orange skin and many... well, not really thorns... they were thick and about a quarter-inch long, but not very hard or sharp. They would hurt if you gripped it hard enough, or if someone threw it at you. The thing looks seriously weapon-like.
Supposedly, both the skin and the insides are edible, so I washed it off first. I thought the skin/rind was tasteless, but it was thin and not hard to chew; I didn't eat much of it. Most people cut it in half, spooning out the contents. There are lots of tiny sacs, filled with a grapelike flesh and an even tinier edible-but-tasteless (to me) seed, which I didn't even notice as I was chewing or swallowing. It tasted mildly tangy-sweet... maybe grapelike, but with a hint of lemon.
I liked it, and I'm always eager to try new taste experiences, but it was expensive ($8). I don't think I'll get one again unless the price comes down. For the money, I think kiwis or mangoes are more of a treat.
