TV & Film The TV Room

I no longer have pay tv, just the freebie channels and have been watching some of the old sitcoms. I can't believe how sexist Father Knows Best is. I understand that was the norm at the time, but jeez.

Example of an episode for those who have never seen it:
Betty, the older daughter, wants to be an engineer, unheard of for women. She joins a surveying team for a summer intern program and only goes one day, because she is hassled nonstop by the men. The foreman tells her father, women should be at home looking pretty in a dress and cooking dinner so it's ready for their husbands when they get home from work.
Jim, the father, agrees. Betty overhears and hurriedly changes into a dress so the foreman will ask her for a date. :wtf:That was the entire episode.

Yet, I'm still watching it. Go figure. :???:

You get the feeling some Republican candidates are watching that show and taking notes for their stump speeches? ;)

I've been watching reruns of Murphy Brown and Night Court, two of my favorite sitcoms from the 1980's. While not perfect, there's a lot less sexism on those shows. In fact, I was thinking recently that Murphy Brown's tough and independent nature makes Mary Richards look like a quivering weenie. And I LOVED The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Am I the only one watching the new series Salem? It's different than other shows I've watched as pretty much all the main characters are bad people to some degree. There isn't really anyone to root for.

Okay, there are some genuinely good people. It just has a reputation. :P

We are going to start watching this soon. :) is it any good?

We've finished Fargo which was pretty crazy, so now we're onto Penny Dreadful & Salem.

Penny Dreadful is ok so far. Creepy though.

Yes, I like it a lot. What a horrible, scary time to have lived through.

Well, we watched the first episode. The acting was terrible & it was generally really cheesy...but I love the storyline so will give it a few more episodes. If the acting doesn't improve the we're giving up, haha :')

You're probably going to be disappointed then, it doesn't change very much.
I thought the special effects were especially cheesy, :p but they manage to keep the storyline interesting enough to want to know what's going to happen next.

Just finished up a day-long binge watch of In the Flesh.

If you haven't seen this yet, WATCH IT. It's relatively short and you'll get caught up quickly.

And if, like me up until yesterday, you've been avoiding it because the advertising for it made it look like just another stupid generic zombie show: DON'T PASS ON IT. The advertising is crap and makes it look like a shoddy rip-off of Warm Bodies or something. It's not. It's seriously a beautiful piece of art and it will probably make you cry at least once because it's poignant and heart-wrenching and everything that works great in a TV series.

I just watched the pilot episode of the new NBC comedy Welcome to Sweden. Not bad, kind of interesting. I think I'll continue watching to see how it goes. There are a lot of English subtitles because the characters were speaking Swedish half the time, so I think I'll watch it again on Video on Demand so I can read the subtitles again. However, if subsequent episodes are going to continue with a lot of Swedish with English subtitles, that’s going to be a problem for me. I’m not very good at reading subtitles. That’s why I rarely watch foreign language movies.

Watched the pilot episode of The Strain. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't too good either. The creature effects were excellent, but I expect that from something helmed by del Toro. Overall, it was underwhelming. Felt more like a filler episode of Fringe than something that could hold its own ground. Generic characters, but the premise of the show might prove to be decent in time. I'll probably give it more of a chance before utterly dismissing it.

Or, y'know, just go read the book.

The 2014-2015 season begins with a special three-night premiere of groundbreaking social experiment UTOPIA. From unscripted mastermind John de Mol, and based on the Dutch hit of the same name, UTOPIA is a bold new series that moves 15 everyday Americans to an undeveloped location and challenges them to create their own civilization. Will it be ultimate happiness or utter chaos? The series will launch on a special night, Sunday, Sept. 7 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), following a FOX NFL doubleheader before continuing in its regular time period, Tuesday, Sept. 9 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), with six special broadcasts on Fridays (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), beginning Sept. 12.

HELL'S KITCHEN cooks up its 13th season with a special two-hour premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 10 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) before having its time period premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 17 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT).

On Tuesday, Sept. 16, following an all-new UTOPIA (8:00-9:00PM ET/PT), new seasons of NEW GIRL (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT) and THE MINDY PROJECT (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT) premiere.

On Wednesday, Sept. 17 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/ PT), new coming-of-age dramedy RED BAND SOCIETY makes its series debut, following an all-new HELL'S KITCHEN (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT). From Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television, and starring Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer ("The Help," "Fruitvale Station"), Dave Annable ("Brothers & Sisters," "666 Park Avenue") and a charismatic cast of fresh faces, RED BAND SOCIETY is a provocative, unconventional and unique coming-of-age dramedy about a group of unlikely and rule-bending friends and the adults who mentor them through the ups and downs of adolescence in Los Angeles' Ocean Park Hospital. Exploring everything from strong friendships, and first loves, to humorous mishaps and heartbreaks, the series is a story of life, with an edgy comedic tone all its own.

On Monday, Sept. 22, origin story GOTHAM (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) kicks off. The series follows one cop, destined for greatness, as he navigates a dangerously corrupt city teetering between good and evil, and chronicles the rise of the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes. The entirely new, untold chapter comes from executive producer/writer Bruno Heller ("The Mentalist," "Rome") and stars Ben McKenzie ("Southland," "The O.C."), Donal Logue ("Vikings," "Sons of Anarchy") and Jada Pinkett Smith ("Hawthorne," "Collateral"). The second season premiere of the adventure fantasy SLEEPY HOLLOW (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) follows, picking up immediately after the thrilling multiple cliffhangers that left Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) buried alive and Lt. Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) trapped in purgatory.

Darkly amusing procedural BONES enters its 10th season on Thursday, Sept. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), with Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (Dave Boreanaz) working to clear his name after the surprising events of last season. Ten-part mystery event series GRACEPOINT, starring Welsh BAFTA winner David Tennant ("Dr. Who"), Emmy Award winner Anna Gunn ("Breaking Bad"), Academy Award nominee Jacki Weaver ("Silver Linings Playbook"), Academy Award nominee Nick Nolte ("Warrior," "Affliction") and SAG Award winner Michael Peña ("American Hustle"), joins the schedule on Thursday, Oct. 2 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). The riveting mystery, that will be resolved in 10 parts, follows a tragic death, and the major police investigation and nationwide media frenzy that subsequently overtake a picturesque seaside town, where anyone is a suspect.

Sundays get re-animated beginning Sept. 28, with the season premieres of THE SIMPSONS (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT), the return of Golden Globe-winning live-action comedy BROOKLYN NINE-NINE (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT) on its new day and time and FAMILY GUY's (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) special one-hour "The Simpsons Guy" season premiere crossover event. Emmy Award-nominated comedy BOB'S BURGERS (7:30-8:00 PM ET/PT) and new multi-cam comedy MULANEY (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT) join the lineup one week later, Sunday, Oct. 5. MULANEY stars Emmy Award-winning writer and comedian John Mulaney ("Saturday Night Live") as a rising stand-up comic trying to take his career to the next level, and the friends and mentors, including one played by Martin Short ("SCTV," "Saturday Night Live"), who lift him up, hold him back and push him around.

Bite-size culinary competition series MASTERCHEF JUNIOR will have its season premiere Friday, Nov. 7 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT). Talented budding cooks between the ages of eight and 13 are given the opportunity to showcase their talent, culinary smarts and passion for food through a series of delicious challenges and cook-offs. Award-winning chef Gordon Ramsay, restaurateur and winemaker Joe Bastianich (Del Posto, Eataly) and acclaimed chef Graham Elliot (Graham Elliot, Graham Elliot Bistro) coach and encourage the promising hopefuls to cook like pros and teach them the tricks of the trade along the way.

Gracepoint is an American remake of the BBC series Broadchurch.

I'm really PO'd at the fact that Brooklyn Nine-Nine was moved to Sundays, which will compete with a lot of other shows I plan to be watching. :bang:

It is the final season of (American) Wilfred. I am kind of wondering how they will end it. The show is crazy in general.

Hit & Miss (TV Series 2012– ) - IMDb
HIT AND MISS, from Paul Abbott, creator of Shameless and State of Play, is a high concept and ambitious new series that follows Chloë Sevigny as Mia, a contract killer with a secret: she's a transgender woman. Mia's life is sent into a tailspin when she receives a letter from an ex-girlfriend dying from cancer revealing that Mia fathered a son eleven years ago. Faced with a difficult decision, Mia becomes the guardian to a new family forcing her to mix her killer instincts with her newly developing maternal instincts. HIT AND MISS tells the story of a lethal killer at the heart of a troubled family and how all of their lives will be dramatically changed forever.
I found this on Netflix. I thought is was a movie at first. It is interesting so far.

Just started watching the Total Drama series. It's an animated satire of reality shows. Pretty funny/silly so far.

Is anyone planning to watch the new Manhattan series? I wonder how historically accurate it's going to be.

I watched the pilot episode of The Lottery on Lifetime last night. The dialogue was weak and the acting wasn't that great. I tuned in mainly for the premise, and there I wasn't disappointed. So I'll continue watching to see how it goes.

FXX is preparing to air the longest marathon in TV history. After acquiring every last episode of The Simpsons last fall for a cool $750 million, the young network is preparing to air all 25 seasons (and the movie) of one of the greatest television shows of all time from August 21st to September 1st.

This means that all 552 episodes of the series will air 24 hours a day, seven days a week for a full week and a half. In addition, Variety reports that FXX will launch the "Simpsons World" digital hub in October, which will allow cable subscribers to watch every episode on demand on their desktops at SimpsonsWorld.com, mobile devices via the FXNow app, and on compatible smart TVs and set-top boxes...

FXX will marathon the entire 'Simpsons' series next month before releasing it online | The Verge
